Pictured is a CP detour that followed the infamous Mississauga derailment on November 10, 1979. CP 4204, C&O 3539 & 3046, and CP 8731 rumble onto the Dundas Sub at Bayview Jct. A CN pilot will guide them as far as London, where they'll return to home rails.

  1. I also couldn’t understand why through trains weren’t run the backway on CN to Weston or some other spot with an easy connection back to CP lines. This would have made the move onto CN at London..straightforward with no long backup moves.

  2. Rather than run all the way on CN from Canpa to London, non priority trains during this event, were run on CP Galt Sub to Guelph Jct, thence on Goderich Sub to Hamilton..and after re-positioning engine & van..run on CN joint section to Canpa (Mimico) where we rejoined CP track

  3. Mobil1fan..they used the CN/CP industrial spur & interchange to get back to CP. This line ran across Dundas Street in London east beside now closed Kellogg’s cereal factory. It included a wye where it originated off CN Thorndale Sub (which was the “back way tho Stratford Kitchener etc)

It was an involved process. Train was run west on CN all the way to CN London psgr.station, then a CN yard engine coupled to the van (caboose) and pulled us backward up the Thorndale Sub (toward Stratford) until the lead unit was east of the east wye switch, we then ran the train over the interchange (about 2 miles) to reach Quebec Street. Reverse process was used for eastbound frt.

  4. Where would they have gotten back on CP at London, at that time?

  5. Whoops! Actually, it should be Nov 17. Thanks for pointing that out Arnold.

  6. Think ya have the wrong date on this one, James. Is it NOV 12th??

  7. Who’s that Foamer up on the hill ? hmmmmmmmm!
