At least we did not have to worry about sun angles, which could hinder shooting northbound trains in the mid-morning.
Here at the former CN (now Keewatin) station is, on the left, VIA 6458, 6428, the power for the #691 train to Churchill. The other pair, PRLX (former GATX reporting marks) 2269 and 2265, is the power for KRC's "Puk train" (Pukatawagan) which was made up and leaving shortly after this image was taken.
The train, running twice weekly, is the only ground connection to that community of 1500 souls.' height='150' width='200' />
The Canadian Pacific gained access to the CVRR in 1883 and by 1909 it was completely absorbed by CP. The line was so busy a second track was added, resulting in the station being moved away from the track to the corner of Ontario & William St., where it remains to this day.
It is rather unusual that the second station, built by CP @1914 was demolished in 1982 while the original CVRR station from 1879 is still with us.' height='150' width='200' />
Stored in Ottawa when I drove thru in 1981 was a number of cars from the Canadian Discovery Train. This is one example of about 20 cars hauled cross country by a pair of CN locomotives for the most part. The train was sponsored by the National Museum of Canada; featuring a rolling museum stopping at many locations along the way in order to introduce citizens to the history of our country. The train ran between 1978 and 1980. I have no idea what became of the rolling stock.' height='150' width='200' />
I don't know what possessed me to try 'mountain goat' antics by wandering thru the brush of the hillside above the station area, but it did present a decent view of the station and surrounding area. In the foreground notably are two columns of 48 ft mill gondolas converted to OCS service that go with Pettibone Speed Loader machines. Note opposing drop aprons on each car, which enables continuous rip-rap unloading by those old rubber tired vehicles(now history). The cars were used mostly in construction areas, such as siding extensions for shoring up weakened areas along the right of way. No, I did not turn scholar; this information on the gons is courtesy of Paul O'Shell. (any errors are mine)

After seeing the E.W.Johnson image taken near Trail BC as posted by Dan Dell'unto; and then reading the caption I just shook my head. Here it is 50 years after the fact and I finally discover that my trip down into Trail to catch the Trainmasters I thought were there, had actually left town. No wonder I could not locate one. Without the connections back then that we have today, I could only assume they were either at Nelson, which they weren't; then they must be at Trail. No luck. Anyway, to go with Dan's most interesting posting I thought it might be appropriate to post an overview of the Cominco Smelter. Quite the place I really I could not build up the nerve to try and get access to.' height='150' width='200' />
