Only three months into the year and it’s been a chaotic three months at that, but at least Canadian Pacific has blessed us with the opportunity to shoot freshly painted barns leading trains on the main once again. This being a prime example, after spending a night parked in Galt on the Waterloo. 4WGA-22 highballs West towards London Only stopping to the few remaining pieces of rail in Lobo siding and then proceeding to tie down for the day.

Quite the combination of events were needed to get to this point, first the original leader of 122 had mechanical issues and was determined to be not a viable leader and the second unit wasn’t able to replace it because it lacked the necessary PTC to run in Canada which led to the Americans grabbing what I’m guessing to be the only other viable unit to lead the train out of the states and into Canada which just happens to be IC 6250.

Most Ontario railfans have caught hundreds if not thousands of trains between them but there’s always those few that remain fresh in the memory of the people that saw it, and even fewer are the trains that the entire community remembers and talks about for years after the event and I’d say it’s safe to say this train falls under both of those categories.

With the very noticeable lack of snow so far this year, I decided to go through the archives to see what conditions were like at the same point for the past couple years. I had almost completely forgotten about this train, as nice as the dual NS leaders as well as a KCS DPU are the most shocking fact is that this was taken on Boxing Day of 2022 with a heavy layer of snow on the ground and what at the time seemed like common blizzards in the air and yet if you move forward exactly a year there’s no snow to speak of no blizzards or flurries and it’s 8° on Boxing Day. So here’s to hoping January will finally provide the gift of interesting and unique snow shot opportunities.

If only we had the same weather for Christmas that we did last year but I’ll take what I can get. Usually for Christmas I just go out and get the CP holiday train which I did, but the opportunity to catch the Waterloo central Christmas train led by an Ex CN GMD-1 was an opportunity that I just couldn’t turn down. I hope everybody had a good Christmas and everybody has a safe and fun New Year’s. Here’s to hoping 2024 will be full of great memories and fun catches.
