CNs business train recently did a tour of Western Canada from North Vancouver to Edmonton, which included the former BC Rail line. With the Stawamus Chief behind, the train is approaching Squamish with two of CNs newest ET44ACs at the helm of this six car train.

Reflections in the Capilano River. CN switch move makes a pull out the yard in North Vancouver, with some power that use to once rule the rails. Its sad to see that all of the newer power in the 21st century has reduced these SDs to yard duties.

Having made good with the Royal Canadian Pacific in a few places, our final shot sees the train snaking along underneath the Hoodoos, just past the town of Ashcroft. Here the train will continue east to Revelstoke for the night.

Into the Fraser Canyon, headed east, the Royal Canadian Pacific is seen crossing Spuzzum Creek Bridge. Much vegetation has overgrown in the Fraser Canyon, making once possible spots for shooting more difficult today.

A week later the Royal Canadian Pacific is photographed heading east out of town. Its a nice sunny day in the Fraser Valley and a good excuse for a chase of this nice looking train in the Canyons.

CPs Royal Canadian Pacific heads west for Vancouver, where it will remain for a week during the Womens LPGA Tournament, of which CP is a sponsor of. Coming down the Thompson/Fraser Canyons the train followed the directional running pattern. Case in point, as the RCP approaches Boston Bar for a crew change on CNs Ashcroft Sub.

A spot that has become a favourite for the last little has been the north side of Fraser River Junction. It is one of those few spots here in Southern BC, where you can capture a train or two crossing a historic bridge, well staying safely away from the tracks. An on-time Via #1 is just an example of this.

CP Sumas Turn is observed heading southbound just north of the historic Clayburn Diamond, for Huntingdon, BC with a pair of SD30ECOs in charge. Since coal has slowed down, all 20 of these units have been pulled from service and instead are working as transfer power. For this photographer these units make him think CP has designed a modern day SD45. To the left of the image is a hazy Mount Robie Read towering over Mission, BC.

Nearing 20 years since she first started working on CPs rails, AC4400CW 9500 is showing its age. One of over 100 CP units leased to BNSF 9500 is observed leading a BNSF local, headed to Southern Railway of BC for interchange. Both 9500 and sister unit 9528 with be dropped shortly and given back to CP.

A movie star is caught leading an eastbound sulphur train through Albion, BC. CP 9777 was used in the movie Unstoppable and is seen with patched ex-SP AC4400CW 6419.

A visit up to Horseshoe Bay along BCs Howe Sound finds CN 546, the daily switcher from North Vancouver to Squamish, heading south back to North Vancouver. Recent forest fires have produced quite a bit of smoke in the last few days, causing scenery, normally visible to be blanketed.

CN has recently pulled its SD40-2Ws and SD60s out of transfer service in the Vancouver-area, replacing them with the ex-UP/Santa Fe C40-8s. On a nice, sunny afternoon, CN 2118 (formerly UP 9083, CNW 8571) is seen leading a northbound Thornton Yard to Lynn Creek (North Vancouver) transfer.

An extremely late Via #1 Canadian hustles at 70mph westward through the eastern Fraser Valley, as Mount Cheam towers high above on a gorgeous, Summer like day. The Canadian has been experience a number of delays in 2015, making late trains such as this one a common sight.

Twenty two minutes out of Vancouver, BC, rebuilt "Prestige Class" Prince Albert Park brings up the tail end of a 25 car Canadian, as the train makes its journey from Vancouver, BC to Toronto, ON. Its sad to see the marker lights on the back of these beautiful cars has been lost.

A sight that had become quite common in Western Canada in 2014-2015 has been foreign power on CP trains. On May 25, 2015 UP 5533 and UP 3698 are observed on a westbound CP grain train, stopped at Port Coquitlam, BC, waiting to proceed for the grain terminals at Vancouver Waterfront. Not pictured is another UP engine, SD90 3748, the trains tail end DPU.

Foreign power on CP trains had become quite a common sight in Western Canada in 2014-2015, as CP had experienced a power shortage, due to leasing out over 100 GEs to BNSF. UP SD90 3742 was one example, sitting idle at CPs Coquitlam Yard. This was the first time the photographer had photographed an SD90 on CPs rails in years.

A six car set of the "Expo" Line Mark 1 Skytrain heads west out from King George for Vancouver-Waterfron with another load of commuters. Three generations of paint schemes are represented in this image. The first two are from the early-2000 Millenium Line building, the middle from 2014 and last two from the 1986 Expo period. The middle cars are part of over 100 Mark 1 cars Translink is upgrading.

Another example weeks later of the Skytrain power rail upgrades, which happened in the late evening. This time, the machinery used by crews is present and crews are busily working away. During this time Skytrain was run into King George Station using the inbound track as outbound.

During 2014 Vancouvers Skytrain system saw a power rail upgrade, which caused service to be reduced later in the evenings. One example was this machine, which hauled a tool car and was positioned nicely for some photo opportunities, including a ghostly bus passing through. In the background the lights of a train can be seen streaking on by. This photographer has been fortunate enough over the last 3 and a half years to live right at the end of the line, in a condo overlooking the guideway and King George Station.
