Running about 6 hours late (a CN breakdown caused a nightmarish crew change in Gogama) VIA 2 heads for a stop in Parry Sound....where it will get hooped for another 45 minutes for a northbound stacker. While the treatment it gets is deplorable, there is nothing better looking on the rails anywhere.

I'm an Olympic junkie. So it takes a lot to drag me away from the TV. The Galt Sub is a roller coaster, which must make train handling a nightmare at times. I'm trying to show its "magic" here.

Luck is an interesting thing. It may follow Newton's Laws and have a balance of its own. There was a healthy amount of "giddiness" that 7010 would be leading 137. The weather didn't look great, but Heritage leader. The weather started to look better as the news broke that a KCS had been stuck ahead of ht eHeritage and a couple of GP38s. Ah, well, bad luck. But as 137 approached Galt, the clouds parted. Good luck, and fresh snow on the ground and a train not dawdling, really good luck.

OK, here's the thing. It's cold for Ontario.....-15. I know that's T-shirt weather for many of you. An awful lot of past Ontario winters have been -2. which means packing snow...that doesn't fly. Flying snow means speed, and there is, IMHO, nothing better than a train at speed. That said, I don't envy the crew switching at Wolverton 15 miles ahead, where the blowing snow will fill the switches as fast as they can clean them. Fr example, 239 will be 35 minutes behind this one, 25 minutes of that cleaning out the power switch at Campbellville. There is nothing easy about winter on the railroad.

It's -15. That's not particularly cold...if you're used to it. The wind makes it feel like -25. Not horrendous if you dress for it. I didn't, but stupid should hurt. But with the sun making a very rare appearance, this was not to be missed. These are the kind of winter shots I dream of....visible speed, showcasing the railroad in its best and most determined light..... conquering my second favourite season (fall is always #1)

Mt Rundle is in the background as an empty K&S potash train heads east. There really is nothing like the drive west from Calgary, and imagining it in the 1880s. That they built this road by hand....in 4 years. There is nothing but awe at the accomplishment......and 150 miles of scenery that will take your breath away.

On the Galt, clean unit? Rare. New paint? Rare. The sun is out? Is this even possible? KCSM 4524 has suffered a serious failure and it shut down. There had been mention of the fire department and spilt oil on the scanner, but there are no signs of anything on this side of the unit. The hope is the lone unit will make it to Lambton with the 60-70 racks it's hauling, but dubious about Toronto yard. And what will be the fate of the KC AC4400 with rumours abounding that CP will retire them one for one with the new kids arriving? It's frustrating at times, but it's never boring.

The Fort Erie pool. Everything and anything was possible, although I doubt any railway in North America could have pulled this off at the time. There was usually a second-generation unit leading, and all CN's dregs trailing. But not today....with a Stratford winter assigned GP9 in the consist, and an SW1200 they lifted somewhere, 432 drags what is almost certainly 100+ mostly empties into the Receiving Yard at MacMillan Yard. Those were the days.....

I find myself getting emotional looking back at these old slides, which I've pulled out every Photoshop trick I can think of to try and make them presentable. This reminds me a little of the model that used to be at the Ontario Science Centre. 3 SD40-2s are westbound in the Fraser Canyon, looking like less than a toy. In my head, I can still imagine Onderdonk et al blasting their way through the impossibilities of building a railroad through here in the 1880s. No roads, no electricity...just dynamite and will. Sure, those who ran the 4-4-0's of the day couldn't imagine 9000hp pulling a mile of containers, any more than I could envision 12000-foot stack trains with three units clogging up the railroad as they do today. Then, as today, it's an incredible sight, and a tribute to engineering and determination. But it was a lot more "human" then....the one really sad change.

Just north of Capreaol, super-hot 215 starts its next leg on its run from Toronto to Winnipeg. An SD40 trails. It's shots like this that make me wish I'd spent a lot more free time trackside for the 18 months I lived in Sudbury.
