CP train 118 passed through Thunder Bay this afternoon with a string of British army equipment on flatcars eastbound from Alberta. Tioga Pass - RPCX 800693 - brings up the rear as the train travels along the mainline adjacent to CP’s Westfort yard.

The morning yard turn out of Thunder Bay North has arrived at the Agricore A grain elevator situated on the north side of the Thunder Bay waterfront. In the background above yard power cn4808, cn265, cn7224 there is ice in the bay and snow on The Sleeping Giant. The railways are busy switching loads in and empties out at the elevators as the lake boats arrive at the elevators for the spring grain rush.

CP train 420, with CEFX1007 leading and cp8570 trailing, is almost across the final span over the Little Pic River. Coming east from Middleton the roadbed is blasted out from the side of the rock cliff, then seven spans on a curve are needed to bridge the river; and once across, the road bed continues to curve and almost completes a horseshoe.

It is midafternoon on one of those spring days where you wish the sun would come out yet the cloud cover persists and the raw, damp temperature causes the shivers. Eastbound intermodal 118, with cp8836 and cp9511 up front, clatter across the Little Pic River bridge. This is the view that one sees looking lakeside when motoring across the highway bridge, especially if you are lucky enough to catch a train here.

VIA 185 has arrived at White River, Ontario and is holding the mainline to detrain the passengers in front of the old station building. On the adjacent passing track an eastbound intermodal creeps by. Once the passengers and the eastbound are all clear, the VIA crew will park the rail diesel cars in the yard until the return trip tomorrow morning.

The crew on the CP work train have called it ‘a day’ and have returned with the train to the yard at White River. The crew had spent the day picking up old ties along the right-of-way to the west of White River on the Heron Bay subdivision. It is rare to see a pair of red barns, as in this instance with SD40-2F’s 9009 and 9008 paired together.

A pair of GP38-2 ‘s, 3071 and 3119, are switching out bad orders on the lead track at the east end of CP’s Westfort Yard in Thunder Bay. The fall colours are in perfect harmony with the red engines and the multi coloured grain hoppers stretching back towards Mount McKay.

Early morning in White River, Ontario. The fog is slowly melting as the rays of the rising sun shine through revealing the pair of VIA diesel rails cars that overnighted in the yard. The crew will be boarding soon to prepare for the return trip to Sudbury.

It’s shortly after 0900 on this Wednesday morning in White River, Ontario. VIA train 186 had to wait for a westbound on the mainline to clear; so the crew decided to use the passing track to board any passengers travelling east. Only two this morning: the gentleman with the camera strolling down the paved pathway and his friend who has already boarded. Both men are from North Carolina. They had overnighted in White River with the intention of taking the train to Sudbury today and returning back on VIA 185 tomorrow.

Train 113 led by CP 9623 and CP 8878 skirts along the shore of Lake Superior near Cavers. Rock slide detector fences are in place alongside the vertical rock faces where the first contractors blasted the roadbed out of the side of these cliffs.

The CP Westfort yard is almost full with loaded and empty grain hoppers during the fall grain rush from the prairies to the elevators in Thunder Bay. Single unit CP 8855 has backed onto a string of 112 empties on track AC40 and will soon be departing westward.

Train 608 is staged in CP’s Westfort Yard in Thunder Bay. This loaded tank car train arrived with CP 9803 as the leader and there would be rear end remote as well. The units will be fueled and the cars inspected before continuing east.

CN SD40u 6009 is equipped for remote control operation. It is paired up with GP9 slug #255. The units are working at the transfer location in Westfort where CN and CP exchange cars.

The afternoon transfer - CN 5760 CN255 CN6009 - is pulling empty tank cars spotted earlier by CP in the transfer tracks. This is a 2 person belt pack operation with one person in the cab of CN 5760 and the other employee standing at the switch watching the tankers roll by and eventually restoring the switch back. The transfer is headed back to Neebing Yard on track R-43 and crossing the CP ‘Farm Lead’ at the diamond. This interlocking is controlled by the CN RTC in Edmonton.

In the lee of Mount McKay and the evening sun, the afternoon roust is travelling from CP’s Westfort yard along the Farm Lead to service several industries in this corner of Thunder Bay. The engineman had previously stopped the units, a pair of GP38-2’s – 3071 and 3119 – clear of the ‘other’ CN diamond in Thunder Bay and contacted the CN RTC in Edmonton for permission to cross. Upon receiving a clear aspect from the dwarf signal protecting the interlocking, CP 3119 is now on top of the diamond crossing as the units proceed towards Resolute Forest Products.

CP train 118 powered by a pair of GE’s - 9679 and 9829 - are almost across the Nipigon river on a combination of deck truss, plate girder and steel beam floor spans. On the north side of the railway and the highway structure [not visible] preliminary construction is underway for the first cable suspension highway bridge to be erected in Ontario.
