Witness the leader on CP 235, at Woodstock, ON, on a sunny but very windy autumn day. Almost two years since I've seen anything but GE's on this train, a chance encounter with SD30C-ECO #5043 in the lead was a nice surprise. Here the train is waiting for the conductor to finish his (very long) walk back to the head end after making a mid-train lift out of Coakley siding. These days, 235 is a westbound "land-barge" with its' usual Montreal-Detroit intermodal cars, but also (in this case, as usual) head-end traffic for London, autoracks lifted at Coakley, the stack cars, and a long cut of autoracks lifted from Wolverton. Quite often the train is well over 10,000 feet out of Woodstock. NOTE: Photo taken from grade crossing; the train had shoved far enough to exit the crossing timing circuit and was stationary at time of photo.' height='150' width='200' />
As a timely modern-day complement to Mr. Mooney's outstanding 1980 photo from the same location which was recently uploaded to this site, we see CN L550 passing the newly-installed third track spans over the Desjardins Canal. This was the fourth movement though the area in the previous hour; CN 422 had dropped their train on track one at Aldershot east, set off at Aldershot, then ran light power back to Hamilton to make a 35 car lift. It was then back to Snake, where they waited on track 3 while CN 550 came out of the yard with 85 cars for Hamilton and Parkdale. For good measure, CP 246 also made an appearance, missing CN 422 by only a few minutes. The old Desjardins Canal bridge, rebuilt after the devastating 1857 passenger train wreck,is now permanently obscured by an even larger span which will carry a third track extending from Bayview to the GO West Harbour station. Now, with further extension of the third track west from Bayview, a new signal bridge has been placed not far from that in the photo above, but on the opposite side of the tracks (see photo #26232). In this view by Bill McArthur we see CN #399 starting up the Dundas sub through the 15 mph crossovers. Fast forward 10 year (! - hard to believe how time flies!...) and now trains can 40 mph through the reconfigured plant. This view was nearly ruined by 524 who had stopped at Snake on track 3 to wait for a 397 that had stopped with issues on track 2 to make a run for the hill. The dispatcher then crossed 524 into Aldershot yard at Snake in between 397 & 384, precision railroading at it's best... Note the new cantilever signal bridge in the distance, the latest change in the ongoing saga of GO expansion into Hamilton. Trackwork is under way at West Harbour, CN Stuart, with new signals also in place at the CP connection at Desjardins. Significant work remains on the bridge over the Desjardins canal, the last major hurdle in the push to extend a third track into Hamilton (2 CTC + Connecting Track). Once again, Hamilton Junction is being reconfigured with the addition of a third track between CN Bayview and the new West Harbour GO Station in Hamilton's north end. This necessitated a new span over the Desjardins canal, the construction of which can be seen at right. Since this photo was taken back in May, new signals have been erected spelling the end of the signal bridge and searchlight signals from the previous reconfiguration of the plant. The new third track will run on the west side of the existing two tracks, about where the east end of the signal bridge is located. Interestingly, it appears that all three tracks under the High Level bridge will be preserved, despite infrequent use of more than one at a time. Here we see a somewhat late CP 246 slowly passing the work zone with work ahead at Kinnear. ' height='150' width='200' />
The 34-year old GP7 is looking a little worse for wear, but remarkably, the TH&B never replaced its' original power, relying on the veteran GM-EMD's right up until the end. This unit would go onto be rebuilt as CP 1683 in 1988 and served another 27 years until being declared surplus in 2015. Popular among railfans for unusual and interesting power, a wide variety of NS – and commonly run-through – power brought locomotive models not often seen in Canada otherwise. In this view by Reg Button, we find newly-patched NS GP40-2 #3035 handling what was probably a short train on the Cowpath track heading for Hamilton in a snowy February 2000 scene. After the demise of this NS operation, the Ford plant at Talbotville that drove the need for the trains' existence followed the train into history in 2010, eliminating the once-common NS high-cubes from southwestern Ontario. Revival of the old Hunter Street TH&B station spelled the end of GO train service to the former CN James Street station, at least for a while. It also meant changes at Hamilton Jct, the union of the Cowpath, the CP, and the CN Oakville Sub in the form of a new connection. Despite a connection already in place between CN and CP, it was decided to build, on taxpayer money, a new bridge specifically for the expanded GO service to Hunter Street. Then, as now, Bermingham had the contract to the preparatory work for the new bridge. Fast forward almost 22 years, and the next GO Transit expansion in Hamilton has seen the construction of the West Harbour station on the site of the old James Street station (in fact, almost underneath it). This again means changes at Hamilton Jct, with a new track to be placed on the west side of the CN Main and Connecting tracks. Meanwhile, CP 526 is somewhat a relic of the past, exercising trackage rights on the CN Oakville sub between Hamilton Jct and Canpa. On this day, we find CP 4214, 1812, 4233, and 8237 hauling autoracks towards the Steel City. CP 4214 would go onto serve QGRY and NBEC under the same number, until CN takeover of the latter resulted in the unit meeting the torch in 2010. Stay tuned for a present-day update. After the two sets of engines meet, 244 will obtain a work authority from begin/end CTC London to the ESS Lobo to retrieve their train of empty autoracks that the inbound crew tied down in the siding early that morning. Once their train was back together, the crew would have more work to do in London as 242's power would be lifted from the passing track. The engineer on 244 shut down the BNSF 899 after the trailing unit produced large amounts of smoke that drifted into the cab of the lead engine. Despite being not that long out of rebuild at CAD, the lead engine was reported to have several defects, including leaky weatherstripping on the cab doors.' height='150' width='200' />
