Just after arriving at Montmorency Falls, PQ, on a school trip, a westbound freight train passed the falls in May of 1982. CN caboose 79821 brought up the rear. I waited by the tracks for another train and did not go in to see the falls. Alas, I did not realize that this line, the Murray Bay Sub, was not a CN mainline. There is a tourist train there now - I should go back and see the falls.

Those Via MLW FPA-4s were a staple at Toronto Union Station for many years. The 6793 is seen here awaiting assignment in July of 1982. I am still amazed that we could sign a release and go all over the facility in those "good old days!"

This photo of the C&O Chessie caboose was taken from the lower deck (vehicle traffic) of the Whirlpool Bridge over the Niagara River Gorge on US Independence Day, July 4, 1983, as we drove west into Canada. The Chessie train from Buffalo has left NY State and is entering Canada, headed westbound into Niagara Falls across the adjacent, upstream, Michigan Central Bridge. The MC bridge is of course no longer used and the associated mainline tracks through Niagara Falls are no more. Those Detroit & Mackinac box cars were often seen.

CN 4572, GP-9 is seen handling Procor tank cars just north of Nanticoke, Ontario, in August of 1985. Storage tanks are seen to the right, and the caboose is further back on the main. I was in Nanticoke for a tour of the Stelco plant as a metallurgical engineering student at the University of Texas at El Paso. My mother's cousin, Henning Christiansen of Hamilton, was a Stelco manager and arranged for the tour.

Via 6902 heads out of Toronto Union Station with a westbound train and cloud of smoke in August of 1984. This LRC-2 unit was built in 1980 and the internet reports it scrapped in 2007. What a wide variety of trains back then. The famous Royal York Hotel looms in the background.

Never a big fan of RDC's but staying with the motto, "If it's there shoot it," here is a view of Via RDC 6205 near Toronto Union Station in August of 1985. 40 plus years later, that's a long time ago folks. I almost did not take this photo in August of 1984, given the Maple Leaf and other Amtrak trains went through my hometown of Lyons, NY, on Conrail between Rochester and Syracuse. I probably took the photo because I liked the Toronto Harbor Castle Hilton in the background just above the departing 347. In any case today F40PH's are mostly history, and the Amfleet cars are on borrowed time with new equipment coming in.
