A trio of venerable EMD's handle CPKC work train no. 2CWR-20 as they head west out of Chapleau on the White River sub. It's great to see these units from the 80's stretching their legs on the mainline and still earning their keep. Usually these types of work trains have just two units up front in this area but with the grueling grades they'll face in western Canada they'll require the additional unit.

With just a couple miles left to Chapleau CP train no. 420-22 has one of the newest units taking charge. CP 7432 is one of a handful of 7400's on the roster. All of them received a new coat of paint in CPKC's newest scheme picked by its own employees.

The sun is quickly setting as a quartet of EMDs shuffle around the CPKC Chapleau yard after a day's work on the White River sub dumping ballast. So far they've been here a week on various work trains and locals. A nice change from the solo geep that is typically used.

The crisp November air is broken by the faint whistle of CP train no. 119 at Indus. It's hustling west into the sunset for a crew change at Alyth, CPKC's main yard in Calgary, Alberta.

The shadows were growing longer as the sun sets and CP train no. 231 emerges from the forest and eases onto the Mud Lake Trestle at Bolingbroke, ON. Just moments before a friend and I were talking about how much warning we'd get before seeing 231. A stream behind us was preventing us from hearing the horn at Patterson Rd just a couple miles away. With perfect timing, and the sun not too low, we saw headlights in the distance.

Nicknamed the "dirty 230" by crews. The cushioned drawbars on most cars on a long train leads to a rough start when it gets moving. The daily mixed freight from Bensenville, IL to Montreal St. Luc. The clearing on the right once held the Christie Lake station back in the day. Now there's not much but some cottages around.

CP 113's tail end dpu finds some early morning light at Crow Lake at the end of May. The train is just a couple hours into it's cross country trip from Montreal to Vancouver. Next stop Toronto!

Back in November 2020 CN released 6 heritage units representing railroads they acquired over the years. Here CN 3008 represents the Illinois Central Railway with it's iconic "Death Star" logo up front. CN 305, the daily Moncton, New Brunswick to Toronto freight eases up and waits for some congestion to clear just east of Cobourg.

With just under an hour of sunlight left CP 231 makes its way west headed for Toronto. A couple delays would slow them down departing Smiths Falls. The unique horn blasts off the landscape marking its return and carried off into the distance after it passed.

A surprise for us all was when a UP leader made it all the way from the states, past Toronto, and on to its destination of Albany, NY. An even bigger surprise was when it returned past Montreal after sitting for a couple hours. Although the tail unit was dropped for an unknown reason it still continued on. UP 5260 approaches the map-dot town of Tichborne.
