While there are good memories of 3 day Holiday weekends with a much younger crew from Cleveland, the shots show that we had some real challenging weather. For this one the high-sun hazy sky sort of cooperated but the weather wasn't the only challenge for this shot. We were there early and decided to wait it out away from the car. It was unseasonably warm and humid and the black flies were out in force. You all know that if you let them bother you, it can drive you crazy, and I can remember wishing for any kind of breeze. This is a southbound train almost home, just about where the railroad joins Trout Lake Rd for the rest of the way into North Bay. Power is 2 of the SD40-2's in their as-delivered paint, like the #1730 that was unveiled recently. May 28, 1979.' height='150' width='200' />
I've probably been to Windsor 3 times to take train pictures over 50 years and on 2 of those that were 11 years apart I found the same SW8 at the ferry slip. Here in June 1967, it's in the maroon and gray but still providing the same service. That makes me wonder if this was just railroad habit, a rare coincidence, or if there was some special modification done on it. ' height='150' width='200' />
Notice that all of the cars are excess height auto racks. The ferry service was only used for cars that couldn’t fit through the tunnel. When the larger tunnel was completed in 1994, the ferry service was stopped. The yard and slip are now a park. The barge Windsor was owned by the N&W and was originally built in Toledo in 1930 as a steam ferry for the Wabash. It was converted to a barge by the N&W in 1969. Internet reports show it being scrapped at Port Colborne in 2007.' height='150' width='200' />
