The first round of dash 8's to be scrapped in Niagara was done by K&K at Martech's old facility, these were brought to SLM in Welland for scrapping. SLM previously scrapped a handful of Canadian Pacific sd40-2's in 2016. The weather was brutal, and my rain jacket wasn't good enough to repeal the downpour we received on this day, which ended up giving me a gnarly case of pneumonia, which lasted about three weeks. I was lucky enough to see a couple more transports of dash 8's on 421, however. I sure do miss the dash 8's running, but I'm sure the crews do not. CN 3009, which was involved in a train hitting another train derailment in Manitoba earlier in the year, rolls by with a few bumps and scrapes. Earlier this month marked a year since the last GIO/Trillium train through their northern trackage in St Catharines/Merritton/Thorold. But a year beforehand, they were kept very busy. In 2023, GIO were tasked with bringing in empty coil cars to Trenergy for fitting of brand new NS hoods. While GIO usually was a twice a week operation, this movement kept them very busy, and extras were often needed. Here, we see a management run extra with GP35 JLCX 3502 at the helm. 3502 is now out somewhere around Edmonton, and this line sits abandon, collecting weeds and rust as the days toll on. Well, an oil leak on 1859 gave us an extra chance at getting those final shots in. On March 1st, 2024, the final train was sent down the Grantham Spur, and in true Merritton Madness fashion, RTC held them so they could meet with a CN freight, that being CN 421. The Niagara faithful, and other enthusiasts got to watch this sight once more, as they also met with a GO train just as they departed Merritton one final time. This was a tough move to watch, as since I have memories, I watched Trillium on this line. It's what got me into the hobby. This line saw a few trackmobile movements since, moving boilers from Trenergy, but since then it's been nothing more than a collection of weeds. ' height='150' width='200' />
We chased it to CN Nelles Rd but obstructions in the shot meant another was in order. 422 was motoring at this point, so the best spot we could get to was the Walkbridge at Bayview. We got there with moments to spare. Among the lashup are multiple CN units, which I'm led to believe is due to 538 not crossing back into Canada for a couple days, and a rebuilt MP15dc Indiana Harbour switcher, which is quite different from what it looked like before. A fun chase with a good result. ' height='150' width='200' />
This was nearing the end of an ice storm which slicked up everything considerably. The travel down to see 331 was no breeze either, but this was a lashup I wasn't planning on missing. Considering that cowls may no longer be running soon if rumours amount to truth, this shot may be a thing of the past. ' height='150' width='200' />
Operations along the Fonthill Spur in Thorold seem to be ceasing after almost 20 years of being the last industry on the line. Multiple sources from Trillium have indeed confirmed that Chemtrade will be ceasing rail operations with Trillium and go to truck only services. While a final date isn't set in stone, the final move will happen between April 30th and May 30th. While it just seems like a small operation, this line has historical value, as it was the route of the last ever NS&T train to run back on March 28th, 1959. Since then, CN and Trillium have operated the line. It was a subdivision, that ran all the way to Welland up until the mid 80's where it was cut to just the outskirts of Welland, and cut down just to a mile long yet again in 1994. It hosted the famed Pine St Spur, which was ceased in 1999, and ripped up last year. Here in this shot, we see leased unit GMTX 340 lift a car down the line, where it'll return with one back. Time is ticking to get your shots on this unique line. It runs Tuesdays and Thursdays between 10 and noon. ' height='150' width='200' />
