The train and name only lasted for about a year, after which the Super was reinstated between Winnipeg and Vancouver (on 1 June 1985--lasting until the Canadian was re-routed over CN lines in the January 1990 cuts). Interestingly, the Panorama was used to test Amtrak Superliners and head-end power over the winter of 1984-85; VIA eventually bought F40PH-2s but decided to convert its existing stainless steel equipment to HEP rather than buying Superliner cars. In this photo from July 1984, we see the Panorama making its early afternoon station stop at Portage la Prairie before continuing west. ' height='150' width='200' />
A pair of sister trains (Numbers 109 and 110) ran between Saskatoon and Regina over CN, then over CP lines from Regina to Portage la Prairie, using the CN Rivers sub between a CP-CN connection west of the Portage station and Winnipeg Union Station. These trains were not overly successful and from June 1984 to May 1985, VIA restored through service over an all-CN route (“the Panorama”). Subsequently, on 1 June 1985, VIA restored the Super Continental between Vancouver, Edmonton, Saskatoon, and Winnipeg. Here we see No. 104 departing Edmonton on a spring 1984 day, just into its 6 hour and 50 minute trip to Saskatoon.' height='150' width='200' />
Alas, in a little over two months, “the Super” will no longer call here—replaced by day trains between Winnipeg-Regina-Saskatoon, Saskatoon and Edmonton, as well as the “Rupert Rocket” extended to Edmonton. The passenger station was opened by Canadian National on 14 February 1966, and the CN Tower office building officially opened on 4 November 1966—at the time, the tallest office building in Western Canada. Eighteen years after this photo was taken (on 3 September 1989), a restored Super Continental began the westbound pull-in/back-out move as CN phased out operations in downtown Edmonton. VIA would finally move to its current station near the Yellowhead Trail and Walker Yard on May 29, 1998. CN moved its office personnel out of the Tower a decade later. (Also note the heavyweight NAR passenger car next to the building.)' height='150' width='200' />
