A trio of refreshed faces rest at GO's former layover facility west of Milton at CP's Guelph Junction, between the Hamilton, Galt and Goderich Subdivisions. It was a brisk Thanksgiving weekend in October of 1999, and these three F59PHs had recently undergone their mid-life overhauls. Two other consists flanked these units, but my notes don't indicate any locomotive numbers. None of these first-generation F59PHs remain on the GO roster today, nor does this layover facility serve GO Trains any longer.

Freshly rebuilt F59PH #535 leads an afternoon eastbound GO Train past Sherwood Forest Park, shortly after departing Appleby Station. The GO decals had not yet been applied to the sides of the rebuilt locomotives, as tests were still underway with the new (but short-lived) stylized logo.

GO F59PH #524 accelerates eastbound out of Burlington station, with an evening rush hour service back to Toronto Union Station. The tracks have since been majorly realigned, and Track 1 (the one this train was operating on) no longer serves the station on the north side of the platform.

GO Cab Car #217 rounds the first bend at the north end of Kay Drage Park, after connecting to the CP Hamilton Sub with one of the few afternoon rush hour trains into Hamilton GO Centre. Highway 403 is mostly out of frame to the left, and the rest of the train is still making its way across the Desjardins Canal/under York Blvd.

GO Cab Car #238 sits at the tail end of the first of two morning trains to depart from Bradford for Toronto Union Station. The locomotive on the point was F59PH #546. In 1999, there were only two daily weekday trains plying these rails in either direction. The Newmarket Sub had been abandoned north of Bradford and completely torn up past Barrie. That then-sleepy line has now been transformed into a busy, mostly double-tracked corridor with regular daily rail service in both directions between Barrie and Toronto. No more standing on the abandoned mainline to get a shot like this.

A trio of GO F59PHs prepare for the morning rush hour at Georgetown. There is a fourth train lurking behind the 548's consist to the right. Recorded locomotives were: 554 with the shortest train (6 cars) in the background on the second track to the left- this was the first to depart for Toronto Union Station. 548 was next with a rack of 9 bilevels, followed by 564 and 10 bilevels. Finally, unit 543- on the fourth track to the right- would vacate the GO platforms with her 8 bilevels and the scene would be empty until the parade began returning in the mid-afternoon through evening. Funny, I recorded the consists but failed to note the exact day, go figure...

GO F59PH #564 brings a string of empty bilevels around the curve and into Hamilton GO Centre on a June morning in 1998. At the time, GO's three morning trains from Hamilton would be brought from Willowbrook Yard, two of them coupled together. The 564's train would be the last to depart on this day and as such, it was pulled past the platform to the east until the first train of the morning departed and vacated the inside track. Today, there is a storage yard for GO trains at this location and this equipment move is no longer necessary.

Ontario Northland FP7ACat #2000 leads the northbound "Northlander" out of North Bay, on a clear June day in 1995. This F-unit had been recently rebuilt from FP7A #1502- the original GMD motor was replaced with a Caterpillar prime mover, which proved to be more cantankerous than originally hoped for. Two other FP7s would undergo the rebuild program and although they looked great, they did not remain in service past the early 2000s. The overhaul program was very in-depth and included a complete overhaul of the engine and electrical systems, as well as installation of desktop controls. It's a shame the ONR didn't opt to just keep the original GMD prime mover as their GP9s that shared the same platform are still in use as of this posting.

GO FP7 APCU #903 trails a westbound hourly Lakeshore service to its final stop at Oakville. The APCUs (Auxiliary Power Control Unit) were purchased- or transferred given that they came from another provincial entity- used, from Ontario Northland. They were de-engined and retrofitted with a head end power generator used to heat, cool and light the coaches given that the GP40-2Ws and GP40-2Ms did not have a HEP generator of their own. Having a control cab also eliminated any need to turn a consist at the end of a line. They were always my favorite pieces of equipment to observe and ride behind on GO Transit. Photo is a scan from a print I purchased at the Toronto train show in the early '90s.

GO GP40-2M #726 shoves an eastbound mid-day Lakeshore West service towards Port Credit, Toronto Union Station and points east to Pickering. GO trains were often much shorter- and to me, more interesting- back then. Scan of a print I purchased at the Toronto train show in the early '90s.

GO F59PH #527 along with sister 560 rest at Burlington, before leading a CNE weekend-sized Lakeshore line train back east towards Toronto and Oshawa. The 527 had already been overhauled, and the 560 was soon to enter the shops for a mid-life rebuild as well. At the time, Burlington was the farthest west terminus for regular train service (aside from a handful of weekday-only rush hour trains to Aldershot and Hamilton GO Centre), and the then-track 1 was still on the north side of the platform. Today, everything has been realigned, and this photo would no longer be possible.

GO F59PH #537 leads one of three morning rush hour trains through Bayview Junction, on the way from Hamilton to Toronto Union Station with some nice golden light hitting the bay and escarpment in the background. The 537 had recently been overhauled, however had not yet received its air conditioning unit over the cab.

GO F59PHs #550 and 560 lead an eastbound Lakeshore West train across the Credit River into Port Credit, on a sunny Saturday morning in late August 2001. An extra locomotive was added to weekend consists on the Lakeshore Line (the only GO line with weekend train service back then) to keep the schedule and accommodate the larger (and slower to board) crowds during the CNE. The 550 had already undergone her mid-life overhaul and the 560 was about to do the same.

GO F59PH #527 rests under Toronto Union Station's train shed on a clear August day in 2001, with a weekend consist of two locomotives and ten bilevels on the Lakeshore line for the Canadian National Exhibition season. The CN Tower stands tall and proud in the background, with significantly less condos, hotels or other towers competing for a spot in the frame than there are today.

Amtrak F40PH #265, operating as VIA train #97 (The Maple Leaf), departs Aldershot for Niagara Falls and ultimately NYC. It's amazing to look back and see how small and seemingly insignificant Aldershot station was back then compared to today- the scene almost looks forlorn despite the autoracks in the yard.
