What i believe to be intermodal train number 120 is entering the town of Saint-Pascal, on its way to the port of Halifax. The power that evening was nothing out of the ordinary, maybe aside for a former Citirail ES44AC trailing in 3rd position. CN had just purchased these locomotives at the time, i believe it was my first time seeing them under their new ownership.

SFG Train 566 manually protects the crossing of Route 132, as they depart from Port-Daniel towards New Richmond with a few loads of cement. The railway had been only reopened almost 2 months prior.

IC 9639 and CN 4901 brings up a long train 559 to Rivière-du-Loup, the train had around 30 cars in tow, some of which were cars they picked up in Matane earlier in the day. IC 9639 is the first Illinois Central engine to be assigned to the Mont-Joli switcher, and the first one not to be an SD70 to roam the Mont-Joli subdivision. It is pretty remarkable to think it had not happened in the 18 years of previous CN ownership of the railway...

Train 403 fills up with diesel fuel before departing Mont-Joli for Joffre (Charny, QC), the locomotive, an early batch of SD70m-2, is nearing 20 years of age. Hard to believe they have been around for that long already... Especially with such clean paint.

A nice SD75i leads saturday's 403 at the pedestrian crossing located in front of the university of Rimouski, standing at almost exactly milepost 123. Despite being in working order, the old mechanical bells have been sadly recently replaced at this crossing.

After taking a few pictures of broken down 4789 the evening prior, i decided to head back the following day to check if the engine was still there, and lo and behold, it was! This time, i was able to snap a pic with train 402 passing by, as there was just enough lighting left to do so.

On the Sunday morning of March 29th, local train 559 departed Mont-Joli with CN 4789 and 9416 as the engines as usual. Not long after, while circulating between Luceville and Saint-Anaclet, the crew reported a problem with the lead engine to the RTC. Almost an hour later, limping at about 10 MPH, the crew dropped off the lead engine of the train, CN 4789, on the siding in Sacré-Coeur, borough of the city of Rimouski. After hearing the news of this operation by a friend of mine, i decided i would go take a look at the parked locomotive after eating supper. Thankfully, they had parked it on a section of the siding that is parallel to the road, so i could snap a few pictures like this one. When i crossed the tracks to head back home, i noticed that the rails were still very dirty from vehicular traffic, meaning that the return trip had yet to come by. I waited about 15 minutes before it came around the bend, however it was unfortunately too dark to take pictures at this point.

One of the first empty cement train trips on the Chandler subdivision slows down to a halt in order to manually protect the crossing of Maldemay Street and 3rd Avenue, which will require new equipment before being activated. As the train approches the crossing, a couple of bystander stops to watch the train go by. It was the first one they were seeing on over a decade! They weren't the only ones i had met on this trip, in nearly every town located along the track, atleast one person paused their joywalk in order to watch the train go by, needless to say, the locals really liked their train, and it shows when you see how hard they are fighting for VIA Rail to come back. Sadly, a few weeks after i took this picture, the old telepgraph poles to the right were cut down, maybe they leaned down a bit too much for comfort... It was one of my favourite features of this spot, so even though the weather was pretty disapointing for photos, i'm glad i got this picture in the end...

On June 17th 2023, while travelling on Route 132 between Rivière-du-Loup and Rimouski i passed train 402 around Trois-Pistoles. I decided to catch it along the highway just after Saint-Simon, which proved to be a good idea as train 559 led by CN 9523 and 9543 was about to enter the siding just as i arrived, allowing me to catch both trains at once. Unfortunately, 559 waited at the other end of the siding, so i did not take a good shot of both trains in the same picture.

RS 65 leads the Laterrière turn down to Port-Alfred at UGB Est Junction on a nice sunny evening. This was the last train of the day for me. In the background we can see an ATV going down the sandy hill. These ATVs and sometimes motorbikes goes up and down the hill all day long during the summer months, these along with the military jet planes from the Bagotville AFB and the dogs barking in the nearby park makes this spot a pretty noisy one... But atleast each time the train comes around, especially the Arvida bound ones, it drowns all of the other noises right away!

A quartet of SFG RS18us pulls a lenghty 565 past Pointe-à-la-Croix's station sign on a beautiful june afternoon. 1819 is one of only 2 RS18s painted in the company's regular paint scheme, and the only one still active.

I don't remember much about this train, it was very much the typical consist you could see on this train back then, with one of the omnipresent ES44DCs up front. What was nice about that day was the cloudy sky, which allowed to take a shot that would otherwise be ruined by the sun shinning directly into the camera.

Just over a month ago, in January 2026, the Société du Chemin de Fer de la Gaspésie resumed freight service on its railway between New Richmond and the Port-Daniel cement plant. Since 2013 when the railway shut down, the tracks were completely overhauled, many bridges and crossing signals were replaced, new retaining walls were built, the Port-Daniel tunnel was enlarged and the track even was relocated slightly at some places, to fight coastal erosion. Here we see the westbound trip as it just got out of the tunnel, which features some new concrete portals. For the time being, trains only run up to 15 miles per hour, stopping at a few unactivated railway crossings and making the round trip between New Richmond and Port-Daniel over the course of 2 days.

A short Matane turn (CN 561) led by GP38-2W 4789 is about to cross Rivière Blanche on a cold Friday morning. Lately, it seems like 561 only brings boxcars to the paper mill on fridays, no ferry or lumber cars. The ferry to Baie-Comeau and Sept-Iles used to operate from Monday to Friday, but it seems that traffic reductions aren't only for trains... Maybe they operate on Saturdays or Sundays now to make up for it, who knows... I highly doubt it though.

Two of the 3 CN SD40s recently leased by the Roberval & Saguenay railway leads the eastbound Arvida - Port-Alfred run at the railway crossing of Route 170 on a sunday morning. That day would prove to be disapointing for trains, as no trains would run later in the afternoon. Although it was sure nice to see some CN owned SD40s, having not seen one since 2013.

Leased GP38-2 1069 pulls a loaded ''Beluga'' train through disused Carleton VIA Rail station. These trains ran back and forth between Nouvelle and Maria in the summer of 2025, carrying crushed stones for the beach replenishment project in Maria. This project was handled by Construction Beluga, hence the train's nickname. On the tail end, leading the empty run that day was SFG 1849, the Amiral RS18u.

If you like shots where you can see the whole train, this one's for you! With the loss of woodchip traffic for the F.F. Soucy paper mill in Rivière-du-Loup and the cement traffic being directed to Moncton via the Newcastle subdivision, you are lucky if train 558 has over 10 cars. Today, i was on the unlucky side, with the train having only 1 empty centerbeam headed to the Lebel sawmill, in Nouvelle, QC. Train 558 does the run between Mont-Joli and Matapédia, interchanging cars with the Gaspésie Railway Society at the end of the outbound trip and serving the Uniboard plant in Sayabec on the return trip. It operates on the opposite days of train 562, which handles the freight cars for Campbellton and the Newcastle subdivision and the Cedrico sawmill in Causapscal.

Former tourist train L'Amiral RS-18u #1849 leads the Monday Matapédia - New Richmond run on a foggy morning through the old town of Sillarsville, now part of Ristigouche-Sud-Est. It is very common to be greeted by fog when driving through the Ristigouche river valley at this time of the day.

CN 561 travels over the Mitis river in Price with the usual 2 locomotives in charge. The 3rd locomotive was dropped in Mont-Joli as they would only service the paper mill in Matane that day, maybe they had problems with the ferry, who knows? Behind the bridge, barely visible, sits the Mitis-1 dam and power generating station.
