The multimark is probably the most iconic logo from the diesel era of the Canadian Pacific Railway. Once displayed on hundreds of locomotives, the classic logo & accompanying "action red" paint colour are down to 6 active locomotives in 2026 by my count. With SD40-2 refurbs coming in the new Keith Creel colours, this number is expected to dwindle further as time goes on. A pair in 2025 was incredible, but the question must be asked: will Ontario see a multimark duo ever again? Chances are slim but you never know...' height='150' width='200' />
After spending 4 days marveling at the efficiency of CP RTC and trains in the Kootenay Valley (especially the Windermere sub), CP had to give us a reality check and a reminder that they are still incompetent, even in BC. The reminder this day was CP 416, which was tasked to work a small block-swapping yard along the Cranbrook sub called Tochty. They arrived at Tochty around 07h00 local time and by 10h00, when 7016W 419 arrived, they were still working the yard. So 419 waited. And waited. And waited. Eventually, CP realized 416 wasn't going to make it to Fort Steele in their 10, so they pulled a crew off a waiting grain empty and gave them 416. Finally just after 1pm, 416 finished the last of their yard work and shoved down the main to clear up the yard for 419 to pull in. Once 419 had the yard to themselves, it was a quick 5 car set off (no more than 30 minutes) and blast off for the border at Kingsgate and UP interchange. At Ryan, they are about 3 miles south of Tochty as they pull around the bend beside Hwy 95. The antics weren't over yet however. Once they passed us, they had to meet the tied down grain train which took the main at Yahk and cut a crossing so that foreman could access their equipment between train. Once 419 went around the grainer, the crossing stayed activated because the grain train was still on the crossing circuit, and there was nothing anyone could do until the grain train got a recrew about 4 hours later. Whoops!' height='150' width='200' />
The pilot project has been an utterly failure from the get-go, despite raising the speed limits east of Stratford to 60mph and doing tons of promotion for the train. As it turns out, not many want to spend 4 hours on the GO from Toronto to St. Mary's and/or London. That being said, when I visited Stratford it was suprisingly busy, indicating some level of demand there. I would hope Metrolinx looks at potentially bringing service to Stratford again in future. Here, GO 560 pulls 10 coaches down the Weston sub, in the final stages of the long journey from London.' height='150' width='200' />
Earlier in the day, CP H88 eastbound left a cut of manifest on the OSR connecting track at Woodstock anticipating a pickup by the shortline later in the day. By the time they returned westbound, OSR had not showed and a foreman needed the track clear to move MOW equipment out of Woodstock. CP H88 hooked back onto the cut they left behind and shoved it into the OSR yard so that a track was clear for the foreman. It's pretty uncommon to see CP on those tracks so it was worth a few shots despite the smoky skies blocking out the sun. ' height='150' width='200' />
