A personal practice was to work the engine against full-set airbrakes to verify loading and to warm up the wheels for good braking, out from the turntable and back several times within the tenth of a mile of shoptrack, that on Monday mornings particularly desirable after a Sunday parked in the shop.

Extensive idling at Port Alberni had accumulated quite a bit of carbon in the exhaust, and the heat from my load testing caused it to be emitted as a magnificent show of sparks, caught with a time exposure of several minutes.

Note the as-built single note “honker” air horn, and above it a three-note added at Victoria for better sound projection operating in reverse over the many local crossings, and coincidentally, a more pleasant sound overall.' height='150' width='200' />
For the Valley Freight from New Westminster to Huntington on Tuesday 1982-03-23, for reason(s) unknown to me, all four, BCH 382 + 383 + 381 + 384 (listed from right to left) were lined up, and as seen from the Queensborough road bridge over railway and Fraser River, are heading from the west end shoptracks (which are in Burnaby) at Trapp Yard to tie onto their train and head eastward.

BCH 381 is an SD38AC, and the others are SD38-2s, and all are EMD built.

The track between those units and the river is CN’s Lulu Island branch.

With me on graveyard shift responsible for setting out the unit for the 0600 yard crew, that put me in prime position to know and to catch an unusual assignment of a Baldwin roadswitcher, CP 8004, instead of the usual MLW S-3, switching those industries early in the morning on Saturday 1973-02-03.' height='150' width='200' />
On Thursday 1973-06-21, that is what led to this pose of Baldwin DRS4-4-1000 CP 8000 when I came on shift at 1600. Note the carshop on the right of the photo has had its many-panes glass windows replaced with translucent fibreglass panels, for greater resistance to breakage. Note also the little yellow funnel hanging on the sandhouse near the sand hose, specifically for hooking into a Baldwin’s sandbox opening to guide the flow in. 1949 technology!

This was only nine days after the head-on collision of four Baldwins up-island north of South Wellington, so 8000 was then the first of only eight roadswitchers. Happily, it is now under detailed cosmetic restoration at the Railway Museum of British Columbia in Squamish.' height='150' width='200' />
Internal engine damage resulted, and that was the end of 8005’s active life, leaving only seven of CP’s original thirteen Baldwin roadswitchers.

The elevated perch for this photo was a handy tree, and served well to show some early history in the near distance. Note the diagonal farm road running to the upper right, once a railway grade of Pacific Coast Coal Mines from Extension to Boat Harbour. That slag pile is from the Alexandra Colliery, and was a good camera perch on the other side of the derailment scene. Off in the far distance is Mount DeCosmos, at the western end of Crown Zellerbach’s log-haul railway from Nanaimo Lakes to Ladysmith.' height='150' width='200' />
