The CN test train, which typically runs as CN 1501 solo, was equipped with a 6-axle unit (same as when they were operating in 2024). The train ran east to Kitchener with the 5791 long-hood forward. It did not proceed east from Kitchener. Instead it went back west. The original plan was to put the 5791 on the other end of the RDC at Kitchener yard but the crew couldn't get a hold of 568, which was working the yard at the time. Instead they went as far east as Sturm and then went back west, utilizing the rarely used siding track at Baden to move the engine so it was nose facing west. Meanwhile, the sun begins to fade from incoming thunderstorms on this warm late April day.

CN 566 creeps across King St. in Uptown Waterloo on a Friday evening with GTW 6420 and CN 9555 for power. After this point, it will pick up some speed and make its way to Elmira for its usual work. CN 566 is typically a M-W-F evening train and typically goes up between 22:30-00:30.

One of my favourite spots on the Galt Sub for shooting trains is Campbellville as it is relatively scenic. Pictured is a light power move consisting of CP 9643 and CEFX 1042. I believe this pair was used to help another train as I recall it came off a westbound autorack train (possibly CP 147 at time). A keen eye will notice some younger rail photographers to the right.

What I assume is a 390-series westbound, rounds the curve at Paris with two BNSF units, the leader in the so-called "fake bonnet" scheme (because of the BNSF lettering) and an H2 BNSF trailing. I would also shoot another train with a BNSF leader in a similar scheme the same day. During this time period, it was not uncommon to see BNSF power on CN trains.

It was the start of spring and the weather in southern Ontario was more like summer with the temperature at the time of this photo over 20 degrees. FEC 709, part of the GEXR fleet at the time, rests in the afternoon sun waiting for its next assignment (likely came in on GEXR 431 earlier).

It was a nice sunny day during March Break and it was one of those days where a few good trains were running, including a CP CWR train with a fresh pair of SD40-2s. This train was also around and got me out earlier. Trailing the lead units were some ex-QNS&L and ex-KCS units (70MACs, not pictured) destined for ONR (well at least the ex-KCS ones) (if I recall correctly). Almost perfect here if the CN 8952 led. My daughter joined me since she was off of school.

Those of you who know me, know that I have a thing for freshly painted units. These two classic SD40-2s, one a wide-cab model, traversing the Galt and Hamilton Subs on a rail train was more than enough to get me out. Interestingly, 9017 was formerly painted in the BAR scheme. The fresh CP paint on these two units glistens against the last of the thick snow pack from a snowy February. The trailing unit was CP 6011.

Another favourite location of mine on the Guelph Sub in Waterloo Region is the Nafziger Rd. crossing between Baden and New Hamburg. Pictured was CN 568 with BNSF 2968, CN 7501, CN 49xx. When the BNSF units were in the Kitchener pool, I tried my best to get what I could. It's already becoming a thing of the past.

CPKC H70 does its usual switching in/around Maple Grove/Toyota plant as it passes over a busy Maple Grove Rd at the border of Kitchener and Cambridge. The train would proceed in reverse to switch the plant at Fountain St. Power is CP 3011-3099. Nice to see some older models working. There was a time when this crossing was at grade. A bridge was definitely a good call as this was a traffic nightmare. I wonder if anyone has any shots here when it was a level crossing.

CPKC 132 makes good time from Buffalo to Toronto as it passes by Canyon Rd. in Campbellville with heritage unit CP 7012 on the point and a ratty KCS GE as a DPU. After all the heritage units released throughout CN and CP since 2019, the CP ones, especially in the script theme, are still my favourite.
