It's been an unusually cold and snowy winter in Southwestern Ontario which means extra plow jobs for Ontario Southland featuring their handsome F Units. A break from the cold with temps above freezing and beautiful winter sunshine made for perfect conditions as they cross Mapleton Line just north east of St. Thomas.

Thanks to a timely heads up, I was able to catch CN Train L325 with CN 3023(EJE Heritage Unit) pulling a couple of Siemens coach cars(SIIX74011, SIIX 73006) seen here waiting for a light over to Port Huron, MI. Apparently these cars were in Ottawa cold cold weather testing. Can anyone confirm??

Making its long awaited appearance in Southern Ontario is CN 8357 SD75IACC rebuild, painted in the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline livery. It arrived in Sarnia, ON., today, January 20, 2026, as the mid DPU unit on grain train 874 heading east on the Strathroy Sub.

While my interest in Rail photography only spans about the last 13 years, my interest in Great Lakes Shipping began way back in 1982. This photo of auto racks being loaded onto the CN Ferry PHYLLIS YORKE combines the two interests. on this particular day my buddy Duncan White called and asked if I would like to take a ride on the CN ferry to Port Huron and back as the lake freight McKEE SONS was being towed up the St. Clair River that day but had docked in Port Huron due to weather and this would be our best chance to see it. Dunc's good friend Captain Bob Campbell was working on the PHYLLIS YORKE that day and welcomed us aboard. Anyone familiar with the Sarnia are may know that there is only one way traffic under the Bluewater Bridges but not many know why. Here's a brief synopsis why as it involves Captain Campbell. In the early morning hours of June 5, 1972, the down bound Steamer PARKER EVANS collided with the up bounder SYDNEY E. SMITH Jr., just south of the Bluewater Bridge. That night Captain Campbell and deckhand Bill Chadwick were working on the Pilot Boat SALLY M and were stationed at the nearby Purdy Fisheries dock. Upon hearing the collision and the resulting whistle blasts from the now heavily listing and sinking SMITH, Captain Campbell immediately departed the dock, maneuvering the SALLY M alongside the SMITH rescued evacuating crew members from the SMITH. All 31 crew members were safely evacuated including the Master of the SMITH, Captain Arn Kristensen(last man off). For their heroic efforts Captain Campbell and deckhand Chadwick received commendations from the United States Coast Guard. Since this accident there is now only one way traffic between the Black River entrance and buoys 1 & 2 in the Lake Huron Cut. There is a Commemorative plaque south of the bridges on the Canadian side recognizing this event.

Train 716 rolls into Sarnia, ON., at Hobson under very threatening skies with triple Norfolk Southern power lead by NS 7692. The power was cut off on arrival and sent back to Port Huron, MI., light as K533, July 12, 2025.

Southern Ontario winter's have been reasonably mild in recent years but this winter has been an exception. A week earlier OSR ran their plow job through much heavier snow drifts, however on this day it was more of a clean up mission. Here they are about to cross Ferguson Line just southwest of Belmont, ON., with the F units supplying the power.

To the best of my knowledge every new VIA Siemens GenSet has passed through Sarnia, ON., eastbound on the Strathroy Sub. Yesterday, September 3, 2024, VIA 2211/2311 operating as VIA 331 did a test run along the aforementioned sub terminating in Sarnia. Here we see her at Brigden Side Road over taking train 301. Upon arrival the train was wyed and the crew was off for required rest and then back on duty around 01:30 to take the train operating as VIA 334 back eastbound.

IC 2466 the only active "Blue Devil" leads train 509 back to London, ON., from Sarnia. I've seen 509 come into Sarnia with less than 10 cars before but seeing this lash up came into Sarnia as light power which is a first for me.
