Some snowplows and boxcars can be seen near the turntable area in the distance. There looks to be a flanger or caboose visible inside the roundhouse (perhaps this was an indoor car repair track?).

Our train, GO #252, has just cleared Old Weston Road crossing on the double track CN Weston Sub and is still crossing over the actual diamonds with the double track CP North Toronto Sub (out of view to the south). The fenced-in area where the station and express building once were was home to a compound lot used for storing snow removal equipment over the summer (the equipment was owned by Westridge Agriculture, which had one of the city snowplowing contracts, and they had rows and rows of old Champion and Wabco graders parked here). The building on the left was National Rubber Industries' Cawthra Ave plant. The Andrew Merrilees yard was just out of view on the right. Judging by the machinery and pipes, there was some sewer or water main construction going on. Today, the old station grounds are gone, the connecting track is still there, but it now goes over both CN mainlines that have been grade separated into a giant trench below.' height='150' width='200' />
It continued to see passenger use into the 1980's under VIA Rail, but by 1990 any passenger stops were gone (possibly a victim of the 1990 VIA cuts). Its importance also likely diminished when GO Transit started Georgetown line operations in 1974 and opted for their own new GO station at Bloor Street, closer to the TTC's Bloor-Danforth subway, rather than using CN's existing station here. According to notes by the late Toronto railway historian Derek Boles, both the CN station and express shed were severely damaged by a three-alarm fire on October 21st 1993, after being vacant/out of use for a number of years prior. Photos after show it boarded up in a state of decay (the roof on the north end was much more damaged, and falling in). A bit more digging shows the station was eventually demolished years later around August 1999, after suffering from the aforementioned fire and years of vandalism. The vacant CN property in the middle of both CN and CP rail lines then became a compound yard for storing City of Toronto contractor snow removal equipment (with parts of the old station platform still visible), but was eventually all obliterated for the Metrolinx/GO West Toronto grade separation trench.

Original photographer unknown, Dan Dell'Unto collection print.

Note: this photo was a scan of an old print purchased from a train show back in the early 2000's, probably at one of the large annual CARM ones held at the Toronto Congress Centre every year. Unfortunately, no photographer or description was noted on the print, but from research I was able to narrow the demolition down to 1999.' height='150' width='200' />
It (and its 800hp predecessor SW8) were popular for light switching and industrial use.

Roger Heed photo, Dan Dell'Unto collection slide.' height='150' width='200' />
This was apparently to allow the GP40's to maintain the correct overall weight, with the added weight of a Canadian Safety Cab and larger 3000 gallon fuel tanks for road service, versus the standard frame GP38-2W (and later GP40-2W) units ordered with a smaller 2300 gallon fuel tank for roadswitcher service.

Reg Button photo, Dan Dell'Unto collection slide.' height='150' width='200' />
The car had been converted from an old heavyweight sleeping car in the early 1950's to provide dental service to children across Northern Ontario. It was retired in 1977 and sold to the Toronto & York division of the Canadian Railway Historical Association, and was later moved to the CRHA's Harbourfront museum nearby at Bathurst and Queen's Quay for display. When the museum was dispersed in the mid-late 1980's, it was sent to Smith Falls to be part of the railway museum there (today the Railway Museum of Eastern Ontario).

Visible in the background is Front Street, CN's Bathurst Street freight yards (before conversion to store GO equipment), many, many, many VIA/CN passenger cars, and a CN FP9, GP9 and HEP baggage set. CN/VIA's Spadina Coachyard closed in the mid-1980's when VIA's Toronto Maintenance Centre opened in Mimico, the yard was cleared and became a largely vacant parcel of land known as the "railway lands" for many years (it even hosted a downtown golf course), until condo development began west of Spadina Avenue around the early 2000's.

The stretch in the distance from whence we came is the climb to Etobicoke North GO Station at the top of the hill, with overpasses for Islington Avenue and Highway 401 faintly visible. The CN McGill sign goes whizzing by on the right (Mile 9.6 CN Halton Sub), and concrete whistleposts stamped "CNR" by the bridge bear signs warning against trespassing (it's a looooong way down, with no side handrails and only a few of those old water barrel platforms to seek refuge). The golf club also has a private crossing beyond the bridge, so golfers could cross easily from one part of the course to the other.

The sleepy branchine feel here is gone today, as Metrolinx has since added a few tracks (4 total now) and extra spans to widen the bridge in the early-mid 2010's.
