Crews work to secure the newly installed frog and take care of any other work as TTR's yellow Pyke crane idles nearby, having lifted the old frog out and aboard boom idler flatcar CP 302839, and placed the new frog in its place.

The small yellow TTR Pyke crane had been a fixture in the corridor for years, puttering around loading rails, changing out switches and doing general maintenance work. As far as research shows, this particular Pyke crane had been in use around Union Station since the 1980's (photos show it previously lettered for GO Transit, taking down the old Strachan Ave crossing tower). The old flatcar, a cast-off from CP (still lettered for CP, and with friction bearing trucks!) was used by TTR for work service for many years, and continued in use after the Pyke crake was donated to the Toronto Railway Museum nearby.

Other neat stuff from the 15th floor:
CN freight with nice power http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=30308
Ontario Northland's Northlander departing over Yonge Street: http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=6975
A VIA "J-Train" departing the train shed: http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=12173
' height='150' width='200' />
After the performance, L&SWR 563 and coach 3 were pulled out of the tent and are being put away inside the former CPR John Street Roundhouse by TRHA's CLC-Whitcomb switcher #1, under the command of museum member Michael Guy (who was a jack-of-all-trades in all things mechanical around the museum). There were at least three volunteers in attendance helping the move; one running the turntable while two others handled the coupling and uncoupling.

On the adjacent radial track is former CP Rail S2 7020 in its faded but flashy action red paint (since repainted into its earlier as-delivered black livery), a speeder, and the former TTR Pyle crane that had been donated to the museum (as one who frequently saw it puttering around the TTR and Union Station, it was nice to see it preserved).' height='150' width='200' />
After our morning class downtown was over, we just rode the afternoon train from Toronto to Bramalea for fun, then back down and off at Weston to shoot CN #577 hot on our tail (that was spotted switching Malport before the GO trip back south) before making our way back downtown via the TTC's 89 Weston Road bus and Bloor-Danforth subway.

To say Weston GO station was somewhat underwhelming was being generous. The basic tunnel near the underpass off Lawrence Avenue leading up to the platform was typical GO "cold concrete" era architecture, with sparse amenities awaiting above. The small corrugated shack of a station building (that always seemed to be closed), next to the quaint waiting room dating from its CN days as...a waiting room (although decently warm on a winter morning at 7am when everyone was crowding inside, it too also always seemed to be closed except for morning rush hour). All a far cry from the grander station present in the 1960's when John Freyseng visited. The surrounding in this part of Weston were also lackluster and somewhat sketchy with apartment buildings, parking garages, a small nearby afterthought of a GO parking lot, old houses and a weedy overgrown yet busy shared CN-CP-GO-VIA freight-passenger railway corridor that was wide open to wander around (a plus for those so inclined).

All of this and more swept away in the early 2010's for a new, larger, more modern station to the south with two separate entrances and more parking, the north one located where the old West End Chrysler Dodge auto dealership was (demolished mid-2000's), and a large grade-separated trench full of tracks to appease the residents of Weston (yet, puzzlingly leaving the busy CP freight line at-grade beside as a thorn in the side of residents for years to come). I suppose the only thing one could really be sentimental about regarding the old station is the old waiting room building (the last vestiges of the ghost of CN's Weston Station), otherwise the new station is overall a much better passenger experience.' height='150' width='200' />
Ontario Northland train #123, the "Northlander", is seen paused beside it waiting to head up the Newmarket Sub after departing downtown Toronto (timetables show #123 was due at Parkdale at 7:08pm, Friday & Sunday only). ONT FP7 1984 leads its TEE trainset consist. In the background is the upper portion of CP's own Parkdale Yard.

The original Parkdale Station was built in 1878 by the Northern Railway of Canada, and closed by CN in 1976. Facing demolition, a local station preservation group sprung up and got the station moved to Sunnyside, where it was unfortunately lost to fire by vagrants. Information on this replacement is scant - it's unclear how long this trainorder station shack or the operator based here lasted, possibly into the early-mid 1980's. Timetables mention it governed all movements to/from the Weston Sub to the Newmarket Sub. It looks like others have visited it in the past as well. Part of the CN freight shed on the left apparently became a fruit market in later years, and survived into the mid-2000's before demolition.

The new cowl-bodied SD40-2F's, CP's last new SD40-2 model (built with 645 engines at CP's insistence, well after EMD moved on to the 710-engined SD60) may look nice but were plagued with teething problems. They would go back to GMD London a few times due to engine wear issues (high silver reading in the oil from internal wear) until the problem was narrowed down to issues with the defective manufacturing of rocking wrist pins in the then-new E3B power assemblies in their 16-645E3B engines. The experience didn't seem to endear CP into placing any follow-up orders, and their next new locomotives would be GE AC4400CW's in 1995.

Part of the new Intermediate Capacity Transit System (ICTS, in between a streetcar and subway) that crown corporation UTDC hoped would take hold (it didn't, outside of a few systems), the TTC bought into the government's new system in the early 1980's for their new Scarborough Rapid Transit (SRT) line, that would have otherwise been run using streetcar/LRV technology.

An orphan system over the years, the SRT line and equipment would be run beyond their lifespan due to political meddling for a replacement line: the Transit City LRT plan in place and fully funded that would have replaced the SRT was cancelled by new mayor Rob Ford in 2010 in favour of "subways subways subways" (which resulted in years of typical political squabbling around length, route, funding, costs), that years later still hasn't been built.

The SRT managed to cling to life until July 2023, when a derailment in service finally put the nail in the coffin and an end to the entire system in Toronto. Scarberians are now taking shuttle buses on the former RofW while construction for the line continues on, 16 years after the original replacement plan was cancelled. One old SRT car is preserved at the HCRY, while another is at the Toronto Zoo, and the bulk of the cars were sold to Detroit for reuse on their own ICTS "People Mover" system.

The fresh-looking 6406 was barely a month old, newly minted at the GMD London plant as one of the first of VIA's new modern F40 passenger units.

CN 9420 was an interm solution before the arrival of the new VIA power: one of 30 GP40-2LW's CN had modified in late 1984 for passenger service as-needed on VIA, including the addition of steam generator blowdown controls for operation with a steam generator car. On top of that, units 9400-9449 had also been delivered new with higher-speed 76 mph gearing for fast freight/intermodal service, making them ideal for pitch-hitting in passenger service in the southern Ontario area.

6000 horsepower should be more than enough to get this passenger train over the road, and the exact same power came back the next day on a westbound with the 9420 leading! One has to wonder why the 9420 was needed, but perhaps the new 6406 was still being broken in, and a second unit was needed as protection power.

And faded and sooty "CPR/ail" 4554 looks like she's seen a bit too much sun and a bit too much Alco smoke in trailing status. 4727 is the most presentable of the bunch, but its fuel tank streaked in leaking engine oil won't impress the shop crews much when they need to roll out another 55 gallon drum to keep her going.

All three were retired by 1993 when the final Big M units were shut down at St. Luc, in an official ceremony on December 23rd 1993. However, some that still ran (or managed to stumble off the shop track at St. Luc on their own) were unretired in 1994 due to a severe power shortage to run out a few extra miles, and by decree from higher up, were only run until major failures. None of the three pictured were so lucky, and some of the undermaintained, ailing units reactivated barely lasted a few months before being unceremoniously shoved back into the deadline. The lucky few managed to squeak their way into early 1995 before CP put the last ones out to pasture for good (except for the repowered M636-CAT 4711, that ran until 1998, and then was sold to Minnesota Commercial. Switch heaters hum quietly and the odd clicking of switch points being lined by the nearby Scott Street tower TMD can be heard against the general faint downtown noise.

Three GO Transit F59PH's can be seen under the drafty train shed: 535 on Track 4 about to depart with eastbound #406 to Pickering, an unknown unit on Track 3 (likely on #477 departing for Burlington soon), and another unknown unit on Track 1 (possibly #832 recently arrived from Richmond Hill). Soon the endless clickity clack of additional F59's and bilevels passing their way through multiple slip switches on the ladder tracks right outside the window would follow, as more morning trains arrived from the east and deadheading equipment moves departed for their next runs.

Down at Union Station it's just starting to get busy, with sleepy commuters flooding the GO concourse off recently arrived Oshawa, Hamilton, Richmond Hill, Oakville and Milton inbound trains, some ordering breakfast at the McDonalds, grabbing a coffee from the Second Cup, a paper from one of the Gateway Newstand kiosks, or maybe a tasty snack from Mmmuffins or The Bagel Shop before hitting the PATH network or subway to work or school (it's a bit too early to hit up the Cinnabon or LCBO, unless you're a certain kind of person).

Outside it's mostly quiet at the nearby Union Station bus terminal as stray GO buses lay over, including a 1600-series Prevost and some MCI D4500's (and it would remain mostly quiet until the rush hour trains stopped running and afternoon bus runs picked up). A TTC 6200-series GM/MCI "Classic" on the 6 Bay route waits at the bus stop on Bay Street outside the GO concourse entrance. Residents in the "few" (compared to today) surrounding condos are starting to get ready for work, and patrons staying at the Royal York Hotel are hitting their alarm clocks before dressing for important meetings downtown. Part of the John St. Roundhouse and coaling tower are barely visible and sit deserted, as the whole rail museum thing hasn't happened yet. Work continues on the Yonge Street viaduct rehabilitation project below, and traffic on Bay and Yonge is sparse with the Gardiner moving well for now. Skydome/Rogers Centre report: the dome is definitely closed today.

The Canadian: on-time with VIA 6404 & 6432 leading. Amtrak Maple Leaf: on-time departure with P32AC-DM 702(!). CN local for switching the Toronto Portlands: eastbound with GP9RM's 7080 & 4100. Union Pearson Express: didn't exist yet. Number of MP40's seen: didn't exist yet. Northlander: still existed, but missed it (drat).

Apparently it was to be very snowy in the afternoon and there was a very important computer science exam at the Ramsay Wright Zoological Laboratories to attend around the same time, thus the early trip into the city allowing plenty of review time (and avoiding any potential GO bus or train delays).' height='150' width='200' />
The regular #144/145 and #147 (Fridays instead of #145) Roadrailers would usually pull a single unit for the assignment, often of the GP40 or SD40 variety, but sometimes something bigger such as an SD50F, SD75I or C40-8M would show up on point.

Long an annoyance for CN because of reduced speeds (and CP because they had to keep maintaining it, even into the OBRY era) the diamonds were finally removed in early July 2024, a few years after the OBRY had run its final train.
