DESX 5391 sitting in the sun at DESX (now Mansour Rail)'s yard in the North East end of Sudbury showing all of her past lives, how many logos can you spot?! While I'm not sure on the exact date, shortly after this photo was taken 5391 was scrapped onsite after plans for it to become a test bed changed. During my final of several attempts at buying the numberboards, the manager (who was confident they'd need them again), noticed I had boots on and said "why don't you head in there and grab some pictures of it up close for once instead of over the fence!", deal! <br> <br> For more info on 5391, click <a href="http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=39887"> here </a>

Recently Mr Mooney submitted a shot (<a href="http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=58055"> http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=58055 </a>) of some former NBSR SD40's awaiting their fate under the Main St overpass in North Bay, a few months later I stumbled across them being cut up on one of the AIM Recycling tracks (formerly Ferne Piche & Sons) just off the Temagami sub by the old CN diamond/Dysktra bypass track North of Old Callendar road.<br><br>From near to far:<br><br>3000 was built as CP SD40 5522 in 10/1966, sold to HLCX and upgraded to -2 electronics around 1999.<br><br>3001 was built as QNSL SD40 219 in 6/1971, sold to HLCX and upgraded to -2 electronics around 2000.<br><br>3002 was built as SP SD40 8448 in 9/1966, rebuilt as SD40R 7326 in 10/1980.<br><br>3004 was built as UP SD40 3021 in 3/1966, upgraded to SD40-2 in 8/1991 before being rebuilt as an SD40M-2 in 3/1994.

CP SD70ACU 7058, rebuilt from UP SD9043MAC 3551 (built 1/1997 as UP 8080), takes up the rear of CP 112 around the bend at the very top of the Parry Sound sub in Romford. While their sister "Super Stacks" in Sudbury are slowly being dismantled, one of the 2 "Twin stacks" built by Inco in 1954 and 1958 stands tall in the background.<br><br>Idled in April of 1972 due to stricter environmental laws, the Coniston plant was kept as a "standby smelter" (although it was never used again), until most of the site but the towers and some original buildings was demolished in 1976. They have stood as part of the "Coniston Industrial Park" and the town's identity ever since, briefly being studied for the feasibility of retrofitting the two dormant 120-metre tall smokestacks with wind powered generation systems in 2007, ultimately resulting in a windmill farm being built further South closer to the French River.

CP 9014 South looks sharp slowly pulling out of the siding at Palgrave after meeting 113 and picking up the Conductor with, not so sharp looking, van 420984 on the head end. I was very happy to see both the "Beaver Scheme" and the SD40-2F's make their own comebacks, but seeing one on the other travelling the CP mainline again is a bet I gladly lost!

ON 1809 South comes off the Newmarket sub and onto the Bala sub at Washago for a quick practice pause of about 10 seconds at the station, running a test train to Toronto collecting data for the return of the Northlander proposal. Early still, it is exciting to see the return of ONR to Central/Southern Ontario after running their last train through here just under a decade ago.

CP 6013 South kicks up a few leaves making a surprise appearance leading mainline revenue freight through Midhurst on Remembrance day. Original leader (8759 seen second up) impacted something hard enough to shatter the Conductor's windshield, this train limped into Chapleau where 6013 was the only power onhand and, luckily enough, wound up leading 420 the rest of the way into Toronto! Not bad for an engine that had an empty fuel tank date on it and was once scrap bound, ironically enough, this engine would pop it's low governor oil button shortly after this photo was taken and after being topped up in Toronto has been running around with counterpart 6031 in the GTA area ever since.

CP 8781 North blasts through Midhurst with train 119, recently repainted to recognize container shipping company, and partner of the new Port Saint John service to New Brunswick, Hapag-Lloyd. The first container train out of the new port in August of 2020 marked a quarter century after CP last serviced Atlantic Canada!

Proudly wearing "Canadian National Green", the 2300 West Control assignment with CN 7600 (was 4728) and CN 600 (was 503) stands in the clear on an overtime move as 385 departs and some trucks need to cross, once everything settles they'll pull this track out of the bowl, "down the Green" and shove it into a track at West Control behind for another Westbound train to grab later. Another day underway at West! I guess there's been some conversation about the green, personally I don't see what the fuss is about. I think this pair looks fantastic and it's caught my eye around the yard a few times now! Very striking and cool to see in person, a job well done by CN. Taken by an off duty employee while wearing all required PPE.

Just before CN donated the 1437, former VIA now Waterloo Central Railway RDC1's 6135 and 6148 (purchased in October 2020) are seen sitting at the North end of West yard waiting for forwarding on CN 533/566 to their new homes. The WCR has plans to restore 6135 to it's original CP 9072 look of 1958, and restore 6148 (an RDC1 converted from an RDC2) to it's CP 9114 look from 1957. A delightful surprise on my way into work, another great reason to show up early when you can help it. You never know! Taken by an off duty employee while wearing all required PPE.
