The CN 15:30 Kitchener Job with GP9RM 7030 makes a mid-afternoon appearance in downtown Waterloo, as the crews heads to the town of Elmira, Ontario on the Waterloo Spur light power. Often during the month of July in the 90’s, with the Budd Plant in Kitchener slowing production for summer shut down, they didn’t require CN service daily, so the 15:30 Job would head to Elmira earlier in the afternoon rather than later in the evening.

CN SD40u 6019 and GP40-2L(W) 9531 as well as GP40-2L(W) 9546 are viewed outside the MacMillan Yard diesel shop in Vaughan, Ontario. Over three decades later, and SD40u 6019 is now assigned to hump service at the same yard along with several other 6000-series SD40u's.

At the time, the job only operated with two units when it was necessary and on this day, both Nutrite and Sulco Chemicals in Elmira had received several cars. The springtime was always a busy period for Nutrite receiving hoppers.

CN train 395 is viewed slowly rolling down the siding in Kitchener, Ontario to clear the mainline for VIA #89, which was due within the hour. Powering the Chicago-bound freight were SD40-2(W) 5336, SD75I 5629 and SD40-2(W) 5360. This was likely brand new 5629’s first trip down the line as it was released from the GMDD plant in London just over a week prior on June 2, 1996. Once the crew reached the yard, they would lift the loaded Budd automotive frame cars and await the arrival of 89 before proceeding west. In the meantime, the friendly conductor invited several local railfans up to tour the cab of fresh 5629 to get some photos. What great times they were.

In July 1996, Ontario Southland Railway RS18 183 is viewed in fresh paint in St. Thomas. Eventually, the unit would be assigned to Tillsonburg and work on the Tillsonburg Spur (former CP Port Burwell Subdivision) to Ingersoll. Built with a low nose in 1968, RS18 183 is ex-Inco 208-3 and was acquired by OSR the previous year. It had been stored at Inco’s facility in Thompson, Manitoba before heading to Ontario. It was briefly numbered OSR #3 before entering the former Michigan Central shop in St. Thomas during July 1995 for work. At the time, I believe this was the first OSR unit to be adorned in the corporate colours of the railway.

The job was on their return trip south to Kitchener when they stopped to set-off the car. An extra CPKC Wolverton Job with GP38-2 3040 and GP20C-ECO's 2307 and 2259 is viewed about to cross Greenfield Road in Ayr, Ontario on the Ayr Pit Spur. The crew was returning to Wolverton after setting-off auto racks on the Waterloo Subdivision for the Toyota Plant in Cambridge. However, they had a lengthy stop at Ayr to switch the busy FS Partners facility on the spur.

VIA Rail P42 910 leads one of the last 84’s that I ever photographed with a solid Budd consist in 2025. Since that time, it has happened very seldomly as the new modern Siemens Venture trainsets have primarily taken over Guelph Subdivision trains 84 and 87.
