CN train 271 is seen rolling through Snider on the York Subdivision in Vaughan, Ontario. The consist included; CN SD70I 5618 and GP40-2L(W)’s 9501 and 9627, which are slowing for a crew change ahead at Snider West. SD70I 5618 is less than a year old having been built by GMDD in London and delivered on October 7, 1995.

Leaning out of the cab of 5649 west, here is the view captured looking back as 737 enters the siding at Puslinch, Ontario on the Galt Subdivision for a meet with an eastbound. At the time, 737 was a dedicated auto train and on this evening the friendly crew had invited a friend and I along for a cab ride to the top of Orrs Lake hill from Puslinch. The consist included SD40-2’s 5649 and 5682.

During an early summer morning, Southern Railroad boxcar 34312 basks in the sun as it sits outside the Kelsey-Hayes facility in Woodstock, Ontario. The industrial spur to this plant was located off the former CN Hickson Spur and the CP trackage to reach it was reconfigured, so it was accessed out of the Woodstock yard passing track near Oxford Street. The plant lasted a couple more decades before it was eventually shuttered and demolished.

During a spring evening, CP auto train 737 with SD40-2’s 5649 and 5682 is pictured entering the siding at Puslinch, Ontario on the Galt Subdivision for a meet with an eastbound. Having already photographed the train near the ski hill in Halton Hills, this was the second time the friendly crew had seen my friends and I. As the train was coming into the siding it slowed to a stop and the engineer yelled down to us, “Hey do any of you want to come for a ride to Orrs Lake?” About thirty seconds later after a quick discussion with my friends, I climbed into the cab of 5649 and the auto train slowly began moving into the siding at Puslinch.

The CN 15:30 Kitchener Job with GP9RM 7030 makes a mid-afternoon appearance in downtown Waterloo, having just crossed Caroline and Erb Streets. The crew was heading to the town of Elmira, Ontario on the Waterloo Spur light power. Often during the month of July in the 90’s, with the Budd Plant in Kitchener slowing production for summer shut down, they didn’t require CN service daily, so the 15:30 Job would head to Elmira earlier in the afternoon rather than later in the evening.

Trundling east from Guelph Jct, the CP “Stone Train” with solo 8205 negotiates the many curves east of the Kelso ski hill as it descends the Niagara Escapement heading to Streetsville, Ontario on the Galt Subdivision. The GP9u, minus a caboose today, was able to get out of the junction amongst the weekday morning eastbound parade of five empty GO Transit sets that would also head eastbound to Milton to load daily commuters for trips into Toronto.

An evening CN 395 is pictured in the yard at Kitchener, Ontario after taking the siding for VIA 89, which is seen passing as it heads to London over the Guelph Subdivision. Powering 395 are SD40-2(W) 5317 and GTW SD40-2 5930, which would soon begin lifting their loaded auto frame cars, once the 15:30 Kitchener Job would clear the yard with GP9RM 7030. The auto frames were manufactured at the massive Budd automotive frame plant in Kitchener situated on the Huron Park Spur.

During a Saturday afternoon, several units from the Port Stanley Terminal Railway are viewed sitting in the small yard in Port Stanley, Ontario. Over three decades later, and the heritage railway is still going strong with regular weekend trips over the historic rails of the London and Port Stanley Railway (L&PS) between Port Stanley and St. Thomas.

During a hot summer afternoon, Norfolk & Western caboose 555019 along with Norfolk Southern C39-8 8617 and C36-7 8531 await their next call to duty at the CN yard in St. Thomas, Ontario. Van 555019 was one of several NW cabooses assigned to Canada.

During the summer of 1996, Dow Chemical sent SW1200 1007 from their Fort Saskatchewan facility to their plant in Sarnia, Ontario. At the time, in return Dow transferred S-6 1001 from Sarnia to Fort Saskatchewan after only being in Sarnia since arriving in 1993. Eventually Dow closed their Sarina plant, and it was torn down with SW1200 1007 eventually being acquired by VIP Rail in Sarnia.

Here 1007 is pictured on route to its new home on train 399 at London. The consist included; 9504, GTW 6410, 5013, 9582, 7208, 218 and DOW 1007.

During a pleasant spring evening, the CN 15:30 Kitchener Job is busy switching the large Budd automotive frame plant in Kitchener, Ontario with GP9RM 7030. Every weekday afternoon, the job would traverse the Huron Park Spur to service the plant, lifting the loaded frame cars and setting-off the empty flatcars.

An early morning eastbound GO train is viewed entering Milton, Ontario on the CP Galt Subdivision where it will make it’s first station stop of the day, loading commuters for the trip into Toronto. At the time, all the GO trains on the CP line were based out of the Guelph Jct layover facility and every weekday morning, the eastbound parade of five empty train sets would descend the Niagara Escarpment into Milton about a half hour apart.

The future Waterloo-St. Jacobs Railway (WSJR) station is pictured during its construction in the spring of 1996 in downtown Waterloo, Ontario situated along the Waterloo Spur. The previous year, the Regional Municipality of Waterloo had purchased the line’s corridor from CN to preserve it for future use. The following year, WSJR began operating tourist trains between the new station in Waterloo to St. Jacobs with occasional trips to Elmira.
