CN intermodal train 144 with GP40-2(W) 9647, SD40-2 5391 and GP40-2L(W) 9458 are passing the Georgetown, Ontario station as they head eastbound on the Halton Subdivision. CN 5391 is ex-CP 5782, which was part of a group of units originally owned by Ontario Hydro.

The CN 15:30 Kitchener Job is viewed arriving in Elmira, Ontario on the Waterloo Spur with a lengthy train and GP9RM’s 4141 and 7030. At the time, the job only operated with two units when it was necessary and on this day, both Nutrite and Sulco Chemicals in Elmira were receiving several cars. The springtime was always a busy time for Nutrite and their spur is seen to the right in the photo already full of hoppers previously set-off.

CN GP9RM 4126, along with Norfolk Southern C40-9W’s 8914 and 8931 are pictured at Dain City, which was situated near Welland, Ontario. Both NS GE’s are only a few months old having been built in February 1996 and they also have NW caboose 555019 with them. Looking back, this was one area I wish I had more photos of, as the small intermodal yard eventually closed in 1998. Today, this area is still operated by GIO Rail, which services Verbio and SLM Recycling from the Canal Spur.

CP SD40A 6403, C-424 4208 and GP38-2 3072 are pictured waiting to depart Aberdeen Yard in Hamilton, Ontario across from the station building. CP 6403 was originally built as Kansas City Southern SD40 625 in June 1970. It was eventually acquired by SOO Line and became SOO Line 6403.

CP Slug 1023 and GP9u 1610 are pictured waiting between pull down assignments at CP’s Toronto Yard in Scarborough, Ontario. Slug 1023 was built as SW1200RS 8116 and eventually rebuilt in 1985 as SW1200RSu 1272. CP Control Cab 1103 (former C-424 4206) and GP9u 8224 are waiting for their next assignment as CP RDC-2 91 and another RDC languish near the caboose shop at CP’s Toronto Yard in Scarborough, Ontario. Eventually 91 was sent to western Canada where it was stored at CP’s shops in Calgary for possible future restoration. Ultimately, the railway found a new home for it at the Alberta Central Railway Museum where it was renumbered back to its original number 9108 and operates there today.

CN GP9RM 4138 along with 4112 and 4102 are pictured waiting for their next assignments at the MacMillan Yard diesel shop in Vaughan, Ontario. In the future, 4138 would be re-lettered AR Illinois for a starring role in the 1997 Canadian comedy “The Wrong Guy” that was filmed primarily around Toronto and area. Almost three decades later and the unit still retains it’s now fading AR Illinois logo on the nose.

Just as the sun sets on a cold winter day, CN GP9RM 4101 is pictured setting-off one Burlington Northern boxcar at Commonwealth Plywood in north Waterloo, Ontario. CN train 399 is seen at Brantford, Ontario on the Dundas Subdivision about to perform some work. The consist included; SD70I 5608, GP40-2L(W) 9477 and SD40-2(W) 5325. Just over five months prior, SD70I 5608 had rolled out of the GMDD plant in London during September 1995.

A daylight CN 422 is captured at the east end of the siding in Kitchener, Ontario with a trio of M-420(W)’s that included; 3517, 3551 and 3527 with GP9RM’s 7039 and 7040. Both GP9RM’s were being lifted for MacMillan Yard in Toronto (Vaughan) after being assigned to Kitchener.

Norfolk Southern train 328 is viewed having just entered the cowpath at Hamilton West, Ontario as it completed its eastbound trip over the CN Dundas Subdivision and is now heading for the Grimsby Subdivision. Powering 328 are Dash 9-40C 8808 and Dash 8-40C 8747.

SOO Line SD60 6000 patiently waits to enter CP’s Toronto Yard in Scarborough, Ontario and meets a hump set heading out with another cut of cars to sort. The train had previously come off the MacTier Subdivision at West Toronto and had SOO 6000, HATX 513, MRL 222, 5821 and 5610, while the hump set had 1519, 1602 and 6713.

During a winter morning, CN SW1200RSm 7305 is pictured switching the Brantford yard on the CN Dundas Subdivision. The crew was sorting tank cars for train 560, which at the time, operated from Brantford to Nanticoke and return.

By the beginning of 1996, both CN and CP had completed the deliveries of their latest motive power. CN’s order of SD70I’s (5600-5625) and CP’s order of AC4400CW’s (9500-9582) had assisted both railways with easing some of their previous motive power constraints. While summer prior, CP had officially retired their last big MLW’s, they still had an active roster of RS18u’s and C-424’s operating in Ontario and Quebec. As well, despite the addition of the 83 new AC4400CW’s, the railway continued to lease hundreds of units through various companies, mainly Helm Leasing. CN continued to roster a small number of operating M-636’s, plus had their HR-616’s, M-420(W)’s and HR-412(W)’s working mainly in Ontario to eastern Canada. However, the company’s next big order was due to start arriving that summer, in the form of 105 new SD75I’s from GMDD in London, starting at CN 5626. Additionally, the start of the Canadian shortline takeover of CN and CP’s unwanted secondary lines and branchlines was still over a year away. Although, many had already fallen or were in the process of being abandoned. Two local examples were the CP Owen Subdivision from Orangeville to Owen Sound and the CN Newton Subdivision from Stratford to Palmerston, as well as the remainder of the CN Owen Sound Subdivision to Harriston. <br> Here, the Goderich-Exeter Railway (GEXR) takeover of the CN Guelph Subdivision was just under two years away as CN GP9RM 4101 leads one boxcar through downtown Waterloo on the Waterloo Spur. The 15:30 Kitchener Job was taking the car to Commonwealth Plywood in north Waterloo and would then return light power back to the Kitchener Yard.
