Here we see The Canadian about to enter the longest tunnel that VIA operates through, the Battle Bluffs Tunnel (2831 feet/863 metres). Though VIA has been through longer tunnels such as: Mount Royal (3.3 miles/5.3 km), Mount McDonald (9.11 miles/14.66 km), and Connaught (5.02 miles/8.08 km) tunnels to name a few, this is all the CN route has to offer. In saying that, Canadian Northern Pacific Railway had made the Ashcroft Subdivision and the first 35 miles of the Yale Subdivision one of the most heavily tunnelled subdivisions in Canada. Between Kamloops and Hope BC, the passengers are under ground for 4 miles of the 160 miles of track. CNoR was so trigger happy with the TNT they blasted 2 tunnels they didn’t even bother using. Now abandoned at Savona an McAbee. ' height='150' width='200' />
That yellow, green, and red broken by the silver steak approaching the final station on the Albreda subdivision, Home. Home is named after Railway Hall of Famer, Harry Home. He’s a local Jasper legend and a foamer making us all look like amateurs. He has passed and I was fortunate enough to spend time with him while he was a passenger of mine when I was working the Skeena. Why is Harry so special? He was a major part of restoring CN 6060, he was one of the men that pitched the concept of the Rocky Mountaineer, he even organized the steam excursions for Expo 1986, all while he was hogging full time in Jasper for CN. CN had to ask him politely to retire well into his late 70s. ' height='150' width='200' />
You know you are on an original Grand Truck Pacific Railway subdivision because it is named after the major river that runs parallel to it. This trend starts at McBride BC with the Fraser sub to Prince George, it continues to the Nechako sub to Endako, then Telkwa sub to Smithers, Bulkley sub to Terrace, and finally Skeena sub to Prince Rupert.' height='150' width='200' />
So, in this case, The Canadian is just departing Jaleasie. The man the station is named after is a former Superintendent of Kamloops, J. A. Leslie. Other examples include: Wabron (W. A. Bron) on the CN Clearwater sub and Wabowden (W. A. Bowden) divisional point on the Hudson Bay Railway. I would love to see railroaders butcher the pronunciation of Mpkreiser station. Not to be confused with the Gladwin Tunnels, this picture came about because The Canadian normally runs through here in the dark. Wishing for the train to be late to get this shot in the day is unfair to my passengers. Skoonka is a First Nations work meaning “Where women make water”. There are several springs along the rock wall. This, of course, is a recipe for mud and rock slides. I have had to dig The Canadian out more than once at this location.
