A few thoughts on this great photo. First, the London Hosiery Mills made socks & we used to go with our kids and buy socks from the surplus store in the basement.
In this photo the car i9n the background most likely belongs to the switchtender. After the gates were automated, the old shanty west of the crossing was removed & a new one built on the east side just out of sight from the car.
The switch in front of the engine led into tracks 3 & 2. Normal position was lined for the switching lead. When the switchtender job was eliminated, normal position of the switch was the opposite, leading into No. 2 track. I was working the yard just after the change was made & our hogger the late Don Broadbear ran through the switch as we pulled a cut of cars out of one of the tracks further up the lead.
