Comments on: A single GP9 easily handles its roadrailer train down the escarpment on its way to Lambton yard. Still one has to wonder why CP lost or gave up this train to CN.

Funny thing Ron' was home visiting dad friday and Marty M came by. Part of the conversation was about that night. Good memory that night for dad. Your right about long hood rs18 with no ditch lights back then. Would have been good to see even at night.

That backward RS-18 part of the trip was at night, so would have been a difficult thing to photograph. If I recall, there weren't ditchlights on the rear, but they weren't a requirement back then, again, if my recollection is correct.

RS18 long hood forward would have made for a great shot on the roadrailer. Amazing how units dont seem to run well without fuel. Cp's roadrailer was always a good catch and some times a suprise. Ie dead lead unit and a Soo SD60 trailing doing the work.

Another interesting thing about this shot, this was early in the CP Roadrailer saga, the 2 axle "adapter trailer" is behind the power, rather than the later "adapter bogie" which resulted in the first trailer having that droop at the front.

Great shot Darrell. One trip I I worked with your Dad on the Roadrailer west out of London, and we had 2 GP9s. About 2/3 of the way up Hyde Park hill, the lead unit died, having run out of fuel. It was a cold winter night, so we weren't going to be able to ride the dead unit very long. Arrangements were made to have a train ahead of us set of his trailing unit, an 1800 series RS-18.
When we reached Glencoe we found out that the RS-18 was facing east. We ended up having that 1800 backwards as our lead unit all the way to the NS Yard in Detroit.
Ah, memories...

It was too shot a haul and never expanded beyond Lambton. Not very profitable. CP was glad to be rid of it.

Darrell, as I recall it had something to do with the expansion of eXpressway service in the Toronto - Detroit lane. I don't think I've seen a shot of an 8200 working the Roadrailer before... nice catch. CP.
