Comments on: Alas, the old diesel facilities at Hamilton’s TH&B Chatham St are but a distant memory, but it gave us guys some great times while it lasted. Here’s a shot of some power laying over near the shop. TH&B 58 and 54. Middle: CP 4222, 4246, 4228 and 4234; and TH&B 57 on the right. So long as you were well behaved and asked permission, there was no fear of being scurried off the property for trespassing, either.

Hi Brad !! Glad you got a “charge” out of this image. I have to admit I really miss the days’ past when there was so much to chose from when going out. You mention going to Lambton and I have to hope you see something at besides something good. ) These days we have to work twice as hard to get anything as in the past.

This is grand Mr Mooney! In my early days I think I was 14 years old and I shot TH&B 56 working Aberdeen Yard on my Dad’s Agfa. Happy New Year! Great Memories. I’m heading out now to see what I can catch here at Lambton, West Toronto.

Great story. It is such a shame that incidents like that are so far and few between these days. The “young set” really have no idea what they have missed. It wasn’t the fact we could wander often at will, but the feeling of friendless that enveloped us. Its gone.

Fellas, I’ll tell you a story of how friendly the employees were here back in ’86: I asked for permission to take some photos, and as so many times before the answer was “sure go ahead- just be careful and don’t get hurt”. I was standing near where this lovely photo of Mr. Mooney’s was taken, and saw something on the track- it was a MLW reverser handle laying in the ballast. As the employees were so friendly, I went over to one of them to show them what I found and return it to them. They said “that locomotive was gone from here a long time ago- keep it a souvenir kid”. I was 16 years old then. 30 years later- I still have it and the fond memories of Chatham street to go with it. Amazing!!

Fabulous material as per usual, Arnold. Living in Hamilton and attending McMaster, Chatham Street and Aberdeen (more so) were easy commuting detours. Wish I had done so more often! Agreed, no harassment to be had, especially on the weekend when there was no one around:). Can’t imagine walking on to an active turntable bridge today!
