Comments on: Almost home, Goderich-Exeter’s daily Goderich wayfreight is passing eastward by the warm glow of a winter sun, a pillar of orange from ground to sky created by light flurries refracting light in all directions. Framed in a tree, GEXR 55413 brings up the rear as the crew performed the first plow run of the season westward earlier this morning.

Thanks guys - Gord, that's insane - you do have a yield sign at the top of the hill for HWY 21... any traffic and you kind of have no choice!

Great shot! It's hard enough bring 40 ton of salt up the hillin a truck you don't stop at hwy 21 at the top you keep rolling. It's always fun watching them bring loads up that's for sure.

I always knew the grade to the mine was steep, but two SD40's can't haul 12 salt loads up that grade? What's the percentage of the grade?

Barely.... they tried with 12 cars... didn't make it past the first grade crossing, and tried in vain - crawling centimeters at a time, and gave it a bit more of a run and still no dice. Reduced to 8 cars.. got halfway up the hill then stalled again - backed to the 'mine' - reduced to 5 and made it up no problem, set up the SBU and get the heck out of dodge with whatever they had. No second run to the mine :)
