Comments on: Although just as rare as that other One-of-a-Kind CP locomotive, MLW RSD-17 #8921 that used to get the fans in some sort of a frenzy, this MLW 4744, an M-640; the only locomotive of its type in the world, probably gathered nowhere near the attention as it lead westbound CP 4568 and 4223 toward Guelph Jct. The M-640 is basically the same as the M-636, 18 cylinders vs 16, and a much larger radiator space at the rear of the hood. It was rated 4000 HP. Never went into production past this demonstrator as ALCO ended up closing shop. The CTG says it was retired in 1992 and went to the Canadian Railway Museum in 1998.

I was working a westbound following 4744 one trip & it 'blew a gasket' around Drumbo and leaked oil all the way to Woodstock. We had a setoff to make at Woodstock & when I was re-coupling the power onto the train I had to wade thru the big oil slick between the rails. I believe that ended up being 4744's last trip.
