Comments on: Amtrak is currently returning F59PHIs 450-470 to Progress Rail. The units have subsequently been sold to Chicago commuter railroad METRA. My first reaction upon reading this was they’re not that old are they? It’s hard to believe they’re 20 years old. On May 9, 1998, we happened to be in London to photograph the Apache ex. CP C424s heading west and lucked out also catching CP 1270 picking up AMTK 450 and 451 from the EMD plant. These were the only two built in London; the remainder of the order was built at Super Steel Schenectady.

METRA gets 20 or 21 2nd-hand units, Amtrak gets brand new Siemens CHARGERS, and taxpayers on both the federal and state levels get – yep, you guessed it !
The 467 is questionable, as it was smashed up a year or 2 ago.
