Comments on: An extra N&W westbound going through Feeder East with lots of power, about to enter CN’s original Cayuga Sub. trackage on the way to St. Thomas. The 1977 camera presented some quality issues but it’s a good look back at this section of railroad when it was relatively busy.

What's interesting is the TH&B opened their new mainline/diversion to Welland after an Acid Train derailment at 9 PM on December 2 1972 between the diversion and Coyle Yard.. the line wasn't ready for service but it was intact... so the last/first there happened without fanfare basically. It was scheduled to open two weeks later. Due to the haste, everything was picked up and moved by hands (paperwork, clerical things, etc). Source: TH&B Ontarion Vol 10 Number 2. Feb 2007.

The first CN train though the tunnel was January 31, 1973. It's probably reasonable to assume this was the first train ever though the tunnel. CN ran an extra (5520 leading fwiw), may have been a publicity extra as there was quite the crowd there, and a sign on the leader stating "CN First Run. Welland Canal Tunnel".

Change over from the previous rail network to the new network happened in the winter of 1972-1973.

In 1972 or so when it opened should have been trains from n&w, pc, amtrak, cn, c&o, and th&b. Probably about 50 trains a day. Anyone remember how many actually ran thru here per railway?

WOW, just look at how well the right of way is maintained! Incredible. I am not sure how much traffic moved over this trackage in its heyday, but it certainly looks amazing
