Comments on: At about mile 8 on CN’s Grimsby sub is Iron Bridge, an old swing bridge over a disused section of the Welland Canal. The bridge dates to the 1890′s, in the foreground are the limestone block walls of Lock 17 of the third Welland Canal, built in 1887.

Tony, all we – the folks old enough to remember “Bum” Bridge – have left are our memories of reckless daring-do. Imagine shimmying to the top of Iron Bridge – that’s what kids did on “Bum” Bridge. I refused to even try; with my fear of heights, it would have been bad news for me up there.

I’ve seen a postcard photo of the Welland Canal – taken just south of Lock 7 – which showed the two lines running parallel to the canal, and it showed the vehicle bridge which once crossed the canal near Lock 7.

Tony, the Docta beat me to it. Once upon a time, there were two sets of tracks which ran into Thorold – parallel, for a distance, to the canal. One of them – apparently – is still in operation; the other one, which crossed “Bum” bridge, is long gone. It was a great place for kids to play – and injure themselves.

Joe, I’m not sure which bridge you mean. Are you referring to the former NS&T bridge that led up the hill to the Townline Road in Thorold? This was just to the west of the Merritt Street overpass.
