Comments on: At US Steel Hamilton Works (formerly Stelco) a CP Rail Kinnear belt job is backing into the sprawling steelmaking facility with a large cut of empty gondolas. These cars are destined to be filled with billets of steel forged from the blast furnaces on-site, which at this time were working overtime making export steel. Both SOR (via CN) and CP were very busy making frequent switches of the facility – the CP traffic consisting of NS family gondolas (traffic forwarded to the NS) and CN with an equal amount of CN/IC gondolas. In this photo US Steel has been busy painting the property in their colours (sky blue) – the buildings in Green were sold off and not re-painted. This would not last long though, within a year the blast furnaces would be idled and they have yet to make any steel through 2012. You may already know this but the basic oxygen furnace has been completely dismantled. Some of the supporting structures related to the sinter plant and the blast furnace have also been dismantled. The blast furnace itself is dwindling as pieces are being removed. I’d guess a full scale demolition of the BF is coming. It’s all inevitable but a very sad end nonetheless. They’ve been smelting iron on that property since about 1895. The BF last operated in 2010. Just revisiting this image, as it showed up on my favourites banner.
