Comments on: Brand new Southern Pacific GP60 units SP 9618 and 9619 sit at CP’s Quebec Street yard in London, Ontario after being outshopped from the nearby GMD London locomotive assembly plant. By the late 80′s, most of EMD’s locomotive production had moved from La Grange to the General Motors Diesel Division’s London plant, including large orders for US customers. Southern Pacific was the largest customer for the GP60 model, ordering 100 units for themselves (lettered SP), and 95 for subsidiary St. Louis South-Western Ry (SSW), all numbered in the 9600-9700 series. The two units shown here are some of the initial SP units.
