Comments on: By the look of it a freight running westbound ran into a problem on the bridge over the Grand River at Cayuga. We’re looking at a 622 foot bridge at mile 46.38.
I have been unable to find out anything on this derailment and so throwing this shot out to RP in hopes someone can give us the information needed.
Just by chance I happened upon this.
Most of the cars that derailed went off on the north side so I went up the sideroad somewhere (I forget) and did a rather miserable walk over the frozen river and about 6 or 8 inches of snow…..strong wind at my back really did a number on me when I was returning to the car. At least a dozen cars piled down below the bridge.
I’m assuming it was a Conrail train. Anyone know? THANKS.

Great shot. Nice capture of the Linemen belted in, most likely pulling up and securing broken line wires.

THANKS, Jakob. I kept thinking I had posted something before but it wouldn't come up thru search. It is to the point now that I cannot recall some of what I have posted. Too many images, plus deteriorating memory cells, I guess. I really appreciate your effort in helping me out.

I knew there was another photo of this on the site somewhere, but man I could not find it with the search... I ended up having to scroll through the pages of Mr. Mooney's photos, one at a time. Here it is, from page 79(!):

I guess C&O isn't off the table as the operator here, but the cars in the wreck are all BN constituent roads, IC/ICG, and Soo Line, suggesting a Chicago connection which does seem more like Conrail bridge traffic. A bunch of the CASO trains ran to/from Elkhart yard in Indiana, and BN had some run-through traffic to Elkhart to bypass Chicago.

In my feeble Google searching I did find more images of this wreck, in a gallery on another site, here:
