Comments on: Chicago and Western Indiana Railroad Alco/GE RS-1 #255 is shown passing through Capreol, Ontario in April 1966. The 255 was built by Alco/GE (both shown on the builder’s plate), s/n 77173, October 1949. I have no idea where the unit was headed.

You could say that the GMD-1 was GM's version of the Alco RS-1 even though the RS-1 was produced many years before the GM version.

In my picture, the unit was headed westbound through Capreol.

Steve, think of it as an Alco S2 (basically the same long hood, and 1000hp 539T engine) on a longer frame, with a short hood (for optional S/G), and road trucks. :)

According to an old issue of UCRS (#240, January 1966), 5 of these C&WI RS1's (252, 255, 256, 260 & 263) were briefly leased by CN for passenger switching around the station in Winnipeg MB, as they had steam generators.

That is pretty much how all of the RS-1s looked. Grand Trunk Western got the last two produced for a US railroad in November 1957 as their 1950 and 1951. MLW built only 3 RS-1s in March 1954 and these apparently went to the NdeM in Mexico. 469 RS-1s were built from March 1941 to March 1960, an incredible run.

C&WI roster indicates that the unit was sold to Precision National, but it doesn't show up in any of the PNC rosters that I've checked.
