I’m not that far off in age from those units. Next month, I will be 39 years old . I’m creeping up to 40. When I turned 20, my friends and girlfriend at the time asked what I wanted for my birthday. I told them “one way ticket to the convalescence house.” I sure felt like I was 80 instead of 20.

At this rate, the 38′s will outlast all of us. We thought the 7′s and 9′s would. Now it’s the 38′s that hold the torch.

I agree with you completely about the GP38′s. They will soldier on for some time.
While CN has sold off many of their GP9′s over the years, the 38 fleet has never been sold and other than ones converted to beltpack operations, the rest are still at it 44 years later!

For 40+ years old (and has this unit ever been repainted?) it is really amazing. I was just starting my working career when these units hit the road. I’m a few years retired now and the majority of these loco’s are still putting in a full days work.
