Comments on: CN didn’t buy any RS1s but it did have a similar MLW-designed units, the 1000 hp A1A-truck RSC13. These units replaced steam on many branch lines in Ontario and Quebec (and initially on Vancouver Island!). Around 1965, 13 of these engines had the centre axle removed and were assigned to tranfer duty in the Toronto and Montreal areas. (The middle axle was later re-installed and the units assigned to the Maritimes until their retirement in the mid-1970s.) Here we see three “tractors” leading an eastbound train onto the Halton sub at Burlington.

(If RSC13s were “tractors” and SW1200RS’ were “pups”…I wonder what the nickname was for GMD1s?)

A great image and a rare view of what appears to be a two head low signal governing westward movement on the South Track of the Oakville Sub. at Burlington (West), it appears its days are numbered though as the cantilever structure has been installed and a two head signal is mounted, but is dark or bagged. The new Signal 321S will be lit up soon, as can be seen in your photos taken the following year. http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=37008 and http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=36796

This would be the daytime Hamilton Turn, trains 471/470.
The joints were probably oiled by Peter Schuster, the local Sectionhand who lived 4 doors from my parents home.

Nice shiny joint bars on the tracks. They must have been freshly oiled. Not something you would see today.
