<title>Comments on: CN GP40-2LW 9616 and GP38-2W 5571 handle train #547 eastbound on the Oakville Sub above the Desjardin Canal in Hamilton.

This photo, as well as being a nice view of the canal, provides a good study between the more powerful 3000 horsepower turbocharged GP40-2LW model, and the less powerful non-turbo 2000 horsepower GP38-2W model: note the difference in fans (3 vs 2), radiator sizes (larger vs shorter), and exhaust stacks (single for turbo vs a pair for non-turbo plus a paper air filter box).

This view also shows the difference in overall height between the taller, lighter &#8220;L&#8221; frame CN ordered on most of its early widecab GP40-2LW units (taller frame members caused the unit to ride higher), versus the normal frame on the GP38-2W model. This was apparently to allow the GP40&#8242;s to maintain the correct overall weight, with the added weight of a Canadian Safety Cab and larger 3000 gallon fuel tanks for road service, versus the standard frame GP38-2W (and later GP40-2W) units ordered with a smaller 2300 gallon fuel tank.
