Comments on: CP Budd RDC-2 car 9115 sits on Track 10 under Toronto’s Union Station train shed with an RDC-3 on CP train #321, the old TH&B Budd run between Toronto and Buffalo NY (via Hamilton and Fort Erie). Note the large Gyralite hung from the front door, a safety feature comparable to modern ditch lights that CP adopted on the lead RDC of all of its “Dayliner” runs since the mid-50′s (yes, a crewmember had to disconnect and drag it to mount on the opposite end of the train at the end of every run).By this time, CP’s John Street roundhouse downtown wasn’t the hoppin’ passenger servicing facility it was during its peak, and only serviced a few CP passenger trains: the Toronto-Sudbury sections of The Canadian (#11/12), as well as maintaining around half a dozen Budd RDC cars for the Toronto-Havelock and Toronto-Buffalo “Dayliner” runs. For the latter train in this photo, two units appear to have been the norm in the 70′s, usually an RDC-2 and RDC-3 together, sometimes a pair of either model, and sometimes a baggage-only RDC-4 was substituted for one of the normal pair. A few cars including 9020, 9063 and 9115 were John Street regulars for many years, and given the year that’s likely 9020 trailing 9115 in this consist. The TH&B Budd run continued into the VIA era, until its final run on April 25th 1981 (see Mr. Mooney’s photo of the last run), coinciding with the first run of Amtrak/VIA’s new Maple Leaf the next day.Walter Schopp photo, Dan Dell’Unto collection slide.

When my wife & I were married 50 plus years ago, we didn't have a car and we wanted to visit her father in Welland. We took CN from London to Burlington, if I recall.. and caught the CP Budd car(s) to Welland. I was already working for CP, but I think we had just lost our pass privileges in our most recent contract, so no pass, we had to pay.

Gorgeous. It would've been great to hop on a Budd Car right in Fort Erie and travel up the Hamilton to Toronto, the current GO service just doesn't cut it for me. ;)
