Comments on: CP M-630 4569 relaxes between runs at CP’s Agincourt Yard in Toronto, Ontario on May 19th, 1979. I believe that this unit is one of a dozen or so, that had been renumbered after being pulled from west coast coal service. The 4569 was possibly built as 4581? Confirmation would be appreciated.

Thank you MrDan!! I knew there had been some renumberings due to equipment being added or deleted while the units were out west. Thanks for the clarification.

The numbering with those M630's can be hard to follow. There were groups equipped with specific equipment for coal service out west, and numbered in specific groups.

The Dean & Hanna book shows 4569 was delivered as 4581 and equipped with Locotrol equipment for remote control receiving/transmitting. Other units in a different group has Pacesetter Master equipment for slow speed loading in the coal loaders. Others had Locotrol repeater equipment (likely to boost the signal from the lead unit?), others didn't have any and were just general freight units.

Later when it was decided to fully equip more of the units to increase flexibility, 4581 had Pacesetter Master equipment added and was renumbered 4569 to fill a numbering gap between groups.

This all became a moot point in the mid-70's when the M630's were replaced by more reliable SD40-2's in coal service, and lost some of their equipment to the SD's.
