In 1975, I obtained a pass to take CP from Toronto to Sudbury, to Sault St Marie. with my new bride. We arrived on the Canadian the night before & stayed at the same hotel the crews used. First thing in the morning we boarded and headed for the SOO. I think we had the 9023 by itself that particular day for our run.
The Conductor was quite friendly and suggested we follow him through the baggage part of the RDC-3 to the operating cab. Before long the engineer had my wife running the thing & that even included a flag stop to board some fishermen with their catches. He talked her through the whole event. She didn't even drive a car back then.
Our intent in going to the Soo was to take the Agawa Canyon trip on ACR. When we arrived, we learned that they had just went on strike so we didn't have the opportunity to go. We still haven't 50 years later.
