Comments on: CP SD40 5408 (ex-QNS&L 212, acquired by CP secondhand in 1985) comes into view on the old Michigan Central bridge over traffic on the Niagara Parkway north of Park Street, leading CP 5560, 5563, and 5520 on a westbound entering Canada after crossing over from the states via the giant steel arch bridge over the Niagara River. Notes by Reg indicate this was a reroute due to “Indians”, so presumably a local indigenous group blockade somewhere (US or Canada?) forced some extra traffic to detour through downtown Niagara Falls over the old MCRR/CASO line (that had become part of CP’s Hamilton Sub in the mid-80′s).

The bridge here over the roadway remains today, unused, despite the line being removed through downtown Niagara Falls in 2001. The bridge in the background carries CN’s Grimsby Sub from VIA’s nearby Niagara Falls station into the US via the Niagara Whirlpool Bridge.

That bridge is starting to crumble. Was there last week and there was a big chunk of concrete laying on the road.
