Comments on: Crossing Rusholme Rd at the Stelpipe Welland Tube works, STELCO GE 45 ton motor, unknown number (not marked) works cars at the entrance to the facility on a late sunlit afternoon. The unit was built way back in 1947, and I am wondering if it is still seeing service somewhere today. The company is no longer in operation here.

Mike: I'm afraid I do not have a timeline for the plant. We'll have to leave that to the local pundits. I can tell you that I shot a couple of UP ACes at that location in 2006, sitting in a heavily weeded property. The ACes were there for some 'finishing touches' (I forget exactly what) at a business that took over after Stelpipe had left. I believe the company which was on the property was "ITSrail", an outfit that in 2007 also put the finishing touches on a number of locomotives being readied to ship to Algeria. During these years there also was a Pipe outfit still in operation which shared the Welland Tube lead to CN Southern Yard though.

Check out the elaborate foot boards on both ends. BTW, why would anyone pay $11K for a Taurus?!:)

Do you know what year they stopped making pipe here? Streetview from May 2015 shows the switcher at the plant (or one in the same scheme) and in service and shoving / pulling a covered hopper from the plant. A lot of pipe flats in the scene as well, likely staged for Welded Tube of Canada immediately to the east along this spur.

CORRECTION: I read my incoming message wrong. THIS unit pictured did not go to PSTR, but rather the unit that was built in 1947, which I mistook for the above, is the one that went to PSTR. Sorry about that. Many of these little critters are confusing in their styles and lack of ID numbers, and since they are not accepted with the enthusiasm of large road units, are often neglected by the fans.

I am told this unit was actually built in 1956, and can be found now at the PSTR in Port Stanley, ON.

Thanks, Paul. Well, considering you could buy a new Taurus auto for $11,000 or so, I would imagine a new fishing boat would be someone of an incredible steal at todays prices. I worked for peanuts back then though, so it all balances out.:o) I wish there had been prices on the sign!

Love those "critter" locomotives, nice scene especially with the flag unfurled. Wonder how much the sport fishing boats were back then :)
