Comments on: Due to health issues I guess this falls’ railfanning will be more of a trip down memory lane than anything else. And some of the memories were great. Shown here in the height of the fall colour season back in 1979 is actually a typical weekend passenger thru Hamilton West. Nice and long with unpredictable power up front. This eastbound is most likely early afternoon #72. But I am not sure. The days of VIA were young, so it is still CN we would see on many trains. CN 4101 and 4105, a pair of GP9 units set up to run on passenger service lead unknown units, VIA “B” and “A” by the look of it. Certainly a wonderful power combination compared to present day. But it was not all wine and roses. We had to endure seemingly endless Budd cars and Tempo trains in our efforts to snare images of “the good stuff”. It was all worth it.

Stuart: Well, you got me on that. I saw far more Budds in a day’ railfanning than I ever did LRCs; but those things in my mind were an absolute piece of junk compared to the Budds. I often wondered why it was not practical to pursue the development of the “Dayliners”, a nice compact ‘bus on rails. The LRCs were the railroads answer to the infamous GM/Vauxhall “Firenza” cars of the ’70s. Worst pieces of junk ever to hit the Canadian roads.

Arnold’s old pictures show the variety of the recent past and always hold interest. I’m sorry for your misfortune and that the fall grain rush won’t be covered this year. But it is already snowing in the west.
I wonder if this was a longer train to handle the Thanksgiving traffic.
I also wonder how many people still travel on the Toronto-London-Windsor corridor today.
