Comments on: From the Central Av bridge looking east toward the Niagara River and the USA, we see a transfer arriving for exchange at the CN Fort Erie yard, which is just off to the other side of this bridge. C&O 3533 and B&O 4350 pull about 20 cars, inc caboose, on this typical dull March morning. Of interest is the old Mentholatum Company building; manufacturers of non-prescription health products. This business had been there for many years, and just this past few months the name has been removed and only memories remain. The business had closed down a while back; in 2009 the Boys and Girls Club of F.E. had leased the property, while in the back (the grey structure) the Bridge Authority had leased space while changes were being made at the border crossing. Track leading up to the building removed many years ago; cars for the local aircraft industry were set off there, I recall “Boeing” cars back in the early 70s. Most track has been pulled up, save for 2 mains and track on left. While looking over this photo I was surprised to see my Grand Marquis parked over by the grey building door. I really walked that far back then? Oh, the horror. :o)

BEM'r: This move pulled up in the Ft. Erie yard near the office area and left its train. running around to fetch the caboose. I then assumed it to be a transfer as I was unable to hang around to wait it going back stateside. Sometimes similar Chessie 'transfers' went around the wye (Ft Erie South) and backed into the yard. I never saw the CR do this.

Yeah, this was during a timeframe that I had no way of knowing who was doing what for whom, at whatever....I was working out of Chatham and sometimes Sarnia and would only get "grapevine" stories of St Thomas crews being held in the motel at Buffalo in order to run the Susie-Q turn or the B&P turn or whatever someone dreamed up as an excuse. So if you label this as a transfer, and not something like CG-41 or DT-41, I'd have to take your word for it. Confusion and disarray as CSX came into corporate existence -and we all know where that led us.

The Mentholatum company is now a community building and has been 'restored' - leaving a few signs for the Mentholatum company too. A classy restoration.
