Comments on: Ghosts of commuter days fill this image. The notches cut into the nose of GMTX GP38-2 # 2277 tell the tale of days when the unit was busy daily rushing commuter trains along the Long Island Railway’s lines. The notches once held red marker lights for when the units were in push mode on the commuter trains. A closer look at this scene in Hespeler reveals an old wooden shed to the far right and old ties that once held the rails of the interurban CP owned Grand River Railway’s branch to Hespeler station. When CP abandoned the branch in the 1980′s CN installed a switch here and removed the diamond so one last factory at the end of the short branch could still be served. When the factory closed the line was removed. To the left of the train is the old Len Mill former textile factory, since repurposed. For those that have Greg McDonnell’s book ” Signatures In Steel”, there is a great image within the book from this location with the diamond and signals still intact, along with a short train led by a CN RS-18.
