Comments on: Goderich-Exeter Railway train 582 is passing Kitchener West and the GO Transit sets laying over for the weekend, as it departs westward for Stratford with GEXR 3030 and LLPX 2236, as well as a short cut of hoppers. The crew had just swapped out motive power in Kitchener, leaving GEXR 2073 and RLK 4095 behind.

Thanks to Lance for telling me the name, but these are known as APU's and allow you to shut down the main prime mover and idle a much smaller horsepower engine to keep fluids warm and prevent the block from freezing.

The SOR installed many of these in their locomotive fleet in Hamilton and it turns out GEXR has some too.

Thanks Jamie.

Reportedly, 3030 is just stored serviceable in Goderich and is not stored with any major mechanical problems. Also, it wasn’t a favorite among the crews either apparently.

As well, I'm not sure about the black spot on the rear of 3030. I'd be interested to know too.

Also, 2073 had a similarly placed black spot on the rear of the locomotive. What's the explanation for that?

Nice shot Jason. Is 3030 still operable or is it on the sidelines? I'd seen it sitting in Goderich a few weeks ago.
