Comments on: Hamilton-bound TH&B Starlite; with the ‘legendary’ #71 leading 401 and 77, passes the Dundas Sub connection at Bayview Junction on a much earlier than usual afternoon run. No. 71, a GP 7, demolished in a collision with a truck at a level crossing in Welland, ON back on Feb 12, 1980; was the first diesel unit ever to be wholly manufactured in Canada.

Just checked my notebook and yes, I have an entry for TH&B Starlite 71, 403, 73 on June 11, 1978; and even the van #434575 (CP). Something got mixed up a long time back; red ink means Mc wrote that one up and it must be his. Mine must have been written at a later date and he gave me a photo with no caption, I assume. But, we were both out on that day as per my notes, so not a lot resolved. I’ll say it is his 126-19. And this photo I guess should be “coll. of AWM.”

It has to be the same shot… I just found it in a Hewitt’s Dairy milk crate in the garage. Lots of treasures out there! Written on the back, left side is “Bayview Jct., ONT.” in black ink, with “TH+B (Starlite) #71, 403, 73 s/b” in red ink below it, centered is “June 11, 1978″ in red ink, and bottom right is “Roll 126-19″ also in red ink. So who is the photographer? And the dates don’t match…

Now you’ve got me thinking, Smith!!! When I pulled this out of my pile, it was a faded yellowish finish that Chas Abel printers seemed to stick me with so often. Was fixed up for RP. I saw it dated 8/6/77 (my writing) so checked my notebook at yes, there it is. But; negs are a mess here for below 1980 and I cannot find it. Possibly a Mc Pic but if you find yours, compare as Mc and I usually shot the same stuff from the same angle. (My notes also list this same set of power coming out an hour later with #77 in the lead.)Now you have me puzzled. I did not know your parents that far back, but I certainly knew Mc. It could be Mc’s, or it could have been printed in duplicates as a request. I used to get these done on Woolco $1.44 days and the printing was lousy. Often I would get 4 or 5 done for traders. Cheap enough.

Well would you look at that… an 8×10 of this very shot hung on my bedroom wall at the parents place for years, and I always thought it was a McArthur shot. Now I’m curious where that framed photo is… I know it doesn’t look as good as this because it had faded over the years. Gold star!
