Comments on: Having just arrived on VIA’s Super Continental, I noticed several BN units in the yard adjacent to what is now the Pacific Central station (at the time, the CN station and site of local offices–the station not yet having been conveyed to VIA; VIA had only officially become its own crown corporation on April 1st). The NW5 is one of only 13 built, 10 for Great Northern…EMD’s answer to Alco’s RS1 and a predecessor of our own GMD1s. The freight shed in the background is part of former GN facilities in central Vancouver including, until the mid-1960s, it’s own station.

One of those early oddball EMD units tailor-made for a need: an NW2 switcher on a longer frame, with an added short hood for a steam generator.
