Comments on: Here’s a different angle for a photo of a westward train out of Fort Erie, number unknown, with CN 5509, 5043, 4574 and 4512 up front. The view is from the hillside at the Walker Quarries, due to foliage and fencing not a location available to us photographers any more. Note the Glendale Av canal bridge is up and a freighter is heading south. I have forgotten whether the train would be stopped, as CN canal Bridge 6 looms straight ahead. The location the train is approaching is known as “CN Iron Bridge” for obvious reasons. The view extends out as far as the QEW as the Garden City Skyway can be partially seen at the extreme right. Soft spring foliage add a bit to the colour here. I had staked out this spot waiting for my own photo version of the new Amtrak Maple Leaf #97, which started up on this day; and the freight was a bonus.

I knew some people in St. Catharines (lived there from 1970-1999) who landed jobs “just like that” as well; and like almost everything else in Niagara……..its mostly all gone.
Todays youth probably find this hard to believe.

If you can believe it…I did not even require a physical, they confirmed I walked up right… GM St. Catharines had close to 11,000 employees then…boom, bust, and echo !!

Thanks. I was trying to remember what that place was.
Those were the days when one could go and apply for a job and “start Monday”. In Hamilton, it was NSC, Dofasco, Stelco, Int’l Harvester; all those places had work. And now……???

It is worth commenting that your photo captured another long gone St. Catharines landmark….The General Motors “BLACK BOX”, adjacent to the Lift Bridge….The Administrative heart of the Four (4) GM St. Catharines plants….I got my start in industry there in 1986, went in for an interview Friday, ….started Monday…
