Comments on: Here’s a “sunny side” view of the old Tillsonburg (my back still aches when I hear that word) CPR station. By the early 1980s the railroad no longer had any use for the building, and it sat empty, and very fortunately not vandalized to any degree. In 1992 it was relocated over to Bridge St next to the CN Tillsonburg North station and the two old stations combined to become the Tillsonburg Station Arts Complex. In this image, the building was on the east side of King St just south of Concession St. West. Tillsonburg was a great place for tracks and stations back then.

Thanks for the info regarding the station. As far as “goodies” in the attic retrieved; that would have been a gold mine in my view. So many of those old places had papers stored rather than tossed. Certainly helped make them a fire trap. ) I recall a friend, Harold Brouse; going up into the old tower at Northumberland, PA (he was yardmaster) and giving me some papers which went as far back as Philadephia & Reading RR, I think it was, from the 1890s. Treasure trove.

One last note, one of our old Conductors climbed up into the attic at lunch one day and came down the ladder with a bunch of documents. I have one framed at home. It is on Tillsonburg & Lake Erie letterhead dated 1900, is a quote for a picnic excursion for the Independent Order of Foresters, from Ingersoll to Port Burwell. The total cost was around 70 dollars plus a few cents a head for for passengers exceeding a set base number.

It is fortunate that the station is still standing, one day on the day job, after switching was completed, we were having supper in the van when a strong thunderstorm blew through. Lightning struck the station and it was later discovered that the ice making machine in there was fried and the ice in the tray was covered in a blackish powder. There was a radio charger in the station that was also ruined. The strike could have easily started a fire.

This station’s original location, was near Tillson Ave. There was a wye, one leg of which connected to the Port Burwell Sub, just south of Tillson Ave. The other leg ran up to a switch connected to the lead heading toward Livingstons and the ending at the CASO line. It included a diamond with the Port Burwell Sub. The main track of the Port Burwell Sub formed the third leg.

You made Stompin’ Tom proud with your reference, and us as well for posting another beautiful station photo! I remember taking a trip here in 1995, and don’t remember the CP station being beside the old GWR station. However, 30 years later and my memory ain’t so grand either! LOL

Thanks for confirming where this station once sat. I know it always looked odd, being ‘trackside’.
